Knitting a Scarf, Again

scarf in progress

I’m almost embarrassed to post this photo because the scarf looks so assy. Shannon gave me this mohair yarn last winter, and it’s gorgeous, so I wanted to make something out of it that I could wear every day. Plus I love knitting scarves at the beginning of fall every year. This stuff is a challenge to knit with, though. I keep losing track of stitches because it’s so hairy. It’s also impossible to frog, so I’ve just been turning a blind eye to most mistakes, knowing they’ll be less than noticeable when the scarf is completed and blocked and twisted around my neck. It is going to have to spend a lot of time in the dryer on fluff, though, to try and get rid of all the “hairs” on it. As I knit, it sheds like crazy.

I think it will be nice when I’m finally done, though. I hope. The more I look at it, the more mistakes I see. Uch.

  1. That pattern looks awfully complicated – I wouldn’t even know where to start with something like that.
    What does “frog” mean?
Do you get sneezy while you knit it?

I bought The Knitting Circle off of your recommendation, and just finished reading it. As I was getting into it, I kept telling myself to put it down, that I shouldn’t read something like this while pregnant, but it was quite good, and even though I was often crying on public transportation, I’m so glad I read it.

  2. The pattern is actually easy, it’s just a lot of yo and k2tog and ssk…I just keep losing track of where I am because with the yarn, sometimes it’s tough to see what you’ve just done. “Frog” means pulling out the stitches. When I try to frog this yarn, no matter how slowly I go, it knots up. FRUSTRATING!

That book was sad, right? Sorry to make you cry, but I’m glad you enjoyed it. :) oh – and nope, no sneezing.

  3. personally, i’m impressed—knitting is like trigonometry to me (beyond complicated) so kudos for doing it—love the colors, too!!!

  4. ok gals – i took up knitting about two weeks ago, mainly b/c i read about it on here and i’m all – hey i want to do that….

but i suck! i’m good at sitting there for an hour or two watching tv and knitting. my dog, however, drops the ball in my lap and nudges me, so every other stitch or so, i have to stop and play fetch. maybe it’s distracting me, but much past 2-3 rows and i’m all messed up. is this normal???? or should i just throw my needles in?

  5. A couple of years ago I knitted Jay an orange scarf with mohair like the one you’re using and yes, it was a pain in the ass and there were a ton of mistakes but they eventually were covered up the more he wore it as the scarf just got fuzzier and fuzzier. It looked great, but he eventually stopped wearing it because he would get orange fluff caught in his stubble or up his nose. About once or twice a week he’d come home and tell me he was stopped by someone (usually a woman) asking him where he got that scarf. Maybe I’ll start wearing it this year…

I think yours looks great and don’t worry; you won’t be able to notice the bumps along the way.

  6. Ali, yes, that’s normal. Just keep practicing; eventually it becomes second nature. I still make a ton of mistakes if I choose a pattern that requires a lot of concentration, though.

    Sandra, thanks.

Rona: Frog = rip it, rip it, rip it… (You know, when you monkey around with your knitting. ;-))

FG, you really won’t be able to see the mistakes when the scarf is wrapped around your neck. Besides, I have finally realized that 99% of the time, no one but the knitter sees most of the mistakes on a handknitted item. (Of course, if I could only get myself think about that when I’m knitting, I’d finish my projects much faster.)

  8. Susie, how is everything going with The Craft Lounge?

  9. The scarf looks great, and it’s true, you won’t be able to find those mistakes once it’s in the state of being worn regularly. Link to the pattern?

Ali, stick with it! It just takes practice and muscle memory. Your hands will learn to do it and take over. :)

  10. Oops, can’t believe I forgot the pattern. Of course, mine looks nothing like it as I’m using a totally different yarn and also I suck:

  11. I thought that was it! That pattern uses handspun.

  12. It’s a beautiful pattern. I wish I could do it justice. But I have to say, I haven’t knit in a while and this is really getting me back in the mood.
