One more extremely self-centered post before I sit down and really get to work today. Over the weekend, the geekboy and I borrowed our friends’ copy of The South Beach Diet. I was thinking maybe we should try it. But I don’t know. Of everyone I know who has gone on it, I’ve gathered this information – 1) the men will lose much more, much faster than the women; 2) the first two weeks are REALLY HARD; 3) the weight comes back. I mean, it’s tempting in terms of a quick-fix. Our friends are doing it for Lent, to atone for all the eating they did over the holidays. But I don’t know if I want to deal with a diet…especially one that sounds a hell of a lot like Atkins. I’m having such a hard time losing weight, though, and I have been trying. Working out, smaller portions, blah blah blah. Obviously I’m not doing enough of something. I’d rather continue exercising rather than simply diet, because I like to know I’m healthy. So what to do? Would it be better to make my workout longer, or would it be better to make it more frequent? Don’t say both, har har. Suggestions? Advice?

Just started weight watchers 2 weeks ago (hubby too!) and yes the meetings can drive ya to the edge but the program is easy to follow and i have not had to cut anything out of my diet…just had to decide how important it was to me that day.
Id recommend it……
Nora, alcohol is a biggie. I truly enjoy a couple glasses of wine. Since I’ve cut down tremendously on the red (although I still have a little when I know it’s safe), I’m hoping that will help. I try to avoid it during the week, save for a glass or two on Thursdays during Survivor. :)
I’m doing Weight Watchers too at the moment, and it’s really working (I’m down 4Kg in 4 weeks, about 8 or 9 pounds I think…). I respond well to the fact there is structure but still free choice. Plus, I like that there are no ‘bad’ foods just a structure that encourages moderation and making sure you get all 5 of the basic food groups each day and do some exercise. You get to reward exercise with food too!
I did it 4 years ago and lost 16Kg (apound 33 pounds), I put about half of that back on after I had a car accident, had some enforced immobility and did some serious ‘comfort’ eating for a while. I’d kept it off for a couple of years prior to the accident. I think it works because it changes your behaviour.
Keep in mind wine can cut down your appitite (as long as you don’t get to the dreaded drunk eating!) Wine and salad make for a very nice dinner!
mmmmm, wine and salad. :)
Andrew – so proud of you!
