Mr. & Mrs. Fitch

fitch

Last night I was pleased to be invited to a performance of the off-Broadway play Mr. & Mrs. Fitch. The play stars John Lithgow and Jennifer Ehle, as married NYC gossip columnists finding themselves out of things to write about. The two find inspiration in an unlikely way, and then have to deal with all the positives and negatives that their inspiration brings.

The show is quite light fare, laugh-out-loud funny at times, liberally peppered with literary and cultural references, and a terribly fun way to spend an evening. Lithgow and Ehle have a great time playing the Fitches, and if you’ve ever wanted to see John Lithgow in his boxers, this is the play for you. We spotted David Hyde Pierce sitting directly behind us — he seemed to really enjoy the show, laughing a lot. We enjoyed it, too. Thanks to my girls at Showtime for the tickets. I definitely recommend Mr. & Mrs. Fitch if you’re looking for something to see off-Broadway. The space at the Second Stage Theater is pretty cool, too. I think maybe it was a bank or something at one time — there were these tremendous walk-in safes near the box office, complete with the big spinning wheel on the door. Neat!

I love Jennifer Ehle too (and will always refer to her as “Miss Elizabeth Bennet” in my very best Lady Catherine accent.) And Ehle had my favorite line of the night, (while raising her glass) “Jane Austen, motherf*cker!”

Thanks to Showtime Girls for the tickets and thanks to FG for dragging me along as her plus one! Damn fine way to spend an evening.
