You Walk Wrong

This New York Mag article about how shoes have ruined our natural gait is really interesting. They mention the MBT shoes in the article - the ones I wear for walking - and I agree with both the pros and cons. [via]

    Ooh, thanks for the link. I love reading this kind of thing, and especially now as I embark on a summer of marathon training. I have tried those Nike Free running shoes and liked them, but was always afraid to use them for long runs. Maybe I need to rethink that.

    Reading that article makes me want those Vibram shoes. I wonder what kind of stares I’d get on the subway (and what kind of shards of glass I’d get in my feet).

    Oh, mostly because it is exceptionally long winded. It took two pages before they gave any clarification to why shoes were actually bad, and even then it was weak. It could have been far more concise, and subsequently more effective in its message.

    I don’t know what to believe anymore. Last year I had horrible foot pain so I went to a podiatrist who told me I had tendonitis in one foot because of the shoes I was wearing, especially an old pair of really comfortable sneakers. So I bought the kind of work-out shoes she suggested, which give more support to the sides of the feet, and I can’t wear them for more 15 minutes of walking before my foot starts the cramp. But I can wear ballet flats–which she said are the worst things to wear when walking–for hours with no pain. So, wtf?
