A LITTLE VINO WOULD BE KEEN-O! Chuck was asking if I could do a post about wine. Of course I can! More specifically, your favorite bottles that are $10 and under. Tell us your old standbys, your new favorites, wine you’ve heard about and have been wanting to try. As long as it’s in that $10 range, anything goes.

Bolla Valpolicella. A wonderful robust red wine for $8 a bottle.

My boyfriend is a sommelier so we drink ridiculous amounts of wine. I’m always looking for a good “house” wine for us i.e. something I can afford without him having to get it for me at cost. Lately, we’ve been enjoying some of the boxed wines (no really) that have been coming out in the past couple of years. Killer Juice and Cellier Des Dauphin are two reds I like. Both boxes actually retail for about $20 here, but they contain 4 bottles worth, so it’s only about $5 a bottle.

Killer Juice? Awesome name.
Chuck on Friday, October 27, 2006 at 10:00 am
YAY!! Thanks Deb. I’ll chime in with mine since I requested.
Santa Rita Cab - Chilean, about $6 and delicious, spicy
Hahn - My favorite cabernet, California - $10, very bold
The Stump Jump Cab - Australian, $10
Bogle Pinot Noir - LOVE it. California $10-$12 (I know)
Rex Goliath Pinot Grigio, California - dry, delish - $8
Twin Fin Shiraz - California, $8
Alice White - Cab/Shiraz - A yummy Aussie blend - $7

if you like champagne but hate the price, try almost any bottle of Cava (from Spain) — it’s just as yummy as champagne, drier than Proseco and you can usually find something great for under $10. also: believe it or not, the Coppola Red Table Wine is excellent.

here’s the link for Killer Juice (warning: audio)–click on California.

It’s a nice one for just sitting on the back porch with a friend. Or twelve.

Tabor Hill - a regional wine out of Michigan. Try the Classic Demi-Sec. It’s the #1 award winning wine and the Midwest’s best selling wine. Perfect for any occassion. It was often served in the White House (during the Clinton administration, I’d like to think). Runs about $10/bottle. I buy it by the case, though.

Sandra, please don’t tell me you’ve never seen this …

Smoking Loon Pinot Noir. Goes great with Pumpkin Pie…it seems weird, but the spiciness of the wine goes great with anything cinnamon-flavored. For me, it’s the wine that heralds in Fall and Winter.
sandra on Friday, October 27, 2006 at 12:22 pm
oh, i have seen it, but not in many years and don’t remember much. i had no idea! debbie, my apologies

Mmmm, there’s something about an Aussie shiraz. Makes me wanna get out my didgeridoo. Alice White you say?
Chuck on Friday, October 27, 2006 at 2:17 pm
Yeah, it’s pretty tasty for a budget wine. I’ve been digging the blends lately too.
You’re didgeridoo sounds more like a didgeridon’t!
Michael on Friday, October 27, 2006 at 3:28 pm
Hey, it’s no small feat getting it to make that sound, brotha.
I’ve been taking notes from this thread. I don’t know anything about wine. I’ve been told the stuff that I buy is crap, so I’m anxious to educate my palate.
Lauren on Friday, October 27, 2006 at 4:17 pm
Thanks for this! I’m wine-retarded so I made a list of these. I usually pick wine by how pertty the label is. I don’t recommend that…
freakgirl on Friday, October 27, 2006 at 4:30 pm
Sandra, no worries.
I need to print out this list, too. Great idea, Chuck. We should make this a semi-regular thing. Maybe next time we could talk about cheese.
Charlie on Friday, October 27, 2006 at 7:32 pm
Columbia Crest Cabernet. Mmm Mmm good.
Melonie on Saturday, October 28, 2006 at 1:24 am
CHEESE?!!?

I am a mouse at heart.
I don’t like wine very well cause I have a sensitive stomach.
freakgirl on Saturday, October 28, 2006 at 7:42 am
Lindmen’s Pinot Noir-a yummy Austrilian wine ($8)
Inglenook Chianti-not high class but smooth and cheap ($7 for a big bottle)
ora on Saturday, October 28, 2006 at 9:04 am
I tend to spend over 10 dollars, but the cheaper wines i like:
Most cordoniu cava, is an excellent outfit and the good ones rival champagne
White riojas from spain. I’M a big White burgundy fan, but it sure is pricey, and white rioja is about as good a replacement as I’ve found.
I really like some of the less fruity provencal rose wines. My favorite, which costs almost nothing, is called Les Grand Terres from the Massiargues Atuech cooperative in the Gard region of France.
If you can get a deal on it, and you often can, I like Wolf Blass yellow label, a very fine aussy red.
I find Mercurey makes some affordable red burgundy.
Sad to say I’ve never been impressed with US wine, but am keen to be convinced. Given my fave wines are White burgundies (very very dry, deep flavored, not fruity whites) and Red Bordeaux (i gues smsot poepel knwo what these are like, what should I try. I’m happy to go up to around 40 dollars but ideally the 20-30 dollar range.

Comment 22 was actually my sister, I think. Hey Cin, you need to change the info when you post. It still has my info from when I was visiting.

Trader Joes has some pretty cheap wine that is good. Charles Shaw or Two Buck Chuck they call it
The Other Andrew on Sunday, October 29, 2006 at 10:13 pm
I have no idea what they sell for in the US, but find a nice New Zealand bottle of Sauvignon Blanc, if you like crisp whites. Something from the Marlborough region. Lots of tropical fruit, passionfruit and pineapple type aromas cut with a sharp ‘green grass’ sort of quality. Heaven icy cold on a warm day. I’m a big fan of Semillion/Sauvignon Blanc blends too, softer but still with the ‘lifted fruit’ feel. In OZ they sell for around AUS$20 for a nice one, so that like $1.50 US right?
