Wes Anderson
Monday, April 21, 2008 at 11:56amOn Saturday I had a conversation with Charlie and the geekboy about my love for Wes Anderson, spurred on by re-watching The Darjeeling Limited last week, and repeated viewings of The Royal Tenenbaums on cable over the past month. About his visuals and his music and how his films are just so saturated with beauty. How sometimes a single scene can squeeze your heart until you almost can’t breathe (Richie Tenenbaum’s shaving scene, the funeral in Darjeeling). Searching around on YouTube, I found these.

I especially loved The Darjeeling Limited. Besides adoring the acting and the dialogue which were fantastic, I really love the colors of India anyway, so I appreciated all of the things he used in the movie, the way they painted the train, etc. The details are incredible - Wes really is an artist with his films. Did you ever watch the making-of on the dvd of that movie? Fascinating, how much detail he puts into everything, so it almost seems real, at least that’s the feeling I got while watching.

As I sit at my desk and look at my “The World of Max Fischer” poster in my cube, I remember the feeling I got when I walked out of the theater after seeing Bottle Rocket the first time. I was an instant fan and went to see it again the next day, bringing several friends along. Even his one misstep (IMO), “The Life Aquatic ,” was pretty darn good. I know he gets knocked for his repeating the same style, but I love it and I hope he continues to make “Wes Anderson movies.”

wes anderson makes movies that remind me of my favorite albums: they are the ones that i might not instantly love, love, love but with repeated listenings they become a part of my DNA. thanks for giving props to the man.

Also, his Amex commercial (long version) was one of the best TV ads I’ve ever seen.
