Weekend Wrapup

Monday, June 30, 2008 at 08:37am

How was your weekend? Another packed one for us. I’ve had too many late nights in the past week or so, actually, and it’s starting to catch up with me. I’ve come down with some sort of summer cold. My throat and lungs are raw and every muscle in my body is aching. Unhappy.

However, the Eddie Izzard show on Friday night was fabulous. I hope he puts this one out on DVD. He pretty much covered everything. And by “everything,” I mean he started with the dinosaurs and went from there. There was some talk about creationism, evolution and intelligent design. He referred to Darwin’s Origin of the Species as Monkey, Monkey, Monkey…You. He did an impression of God smoking a bong. We laughed and laughed. Although we did not laugh as much as the woman a few rows in front of us, who was honking and hooting so loudly that the people behind her got up and moved to another seat.

It’s not a night out with Freakgirl without some sort of pop-culture moment, and this night was no exception. We waited in a ridiculously long line to get into Radio City. As we finally got close to the doors, a staff member took our tickets. I was distracted, having to pee, and rummaging through my purse, but when she began to speak, I snapped to attention. You know how you know a voice, but you can’t quite place it? So I’m frantically flipping through the files in my brain, staring at this woman, and it quickly hits me. I say to her, “Monica?” and she smiles and says, “Yup!” and all my friends look at me in disbelief that I have a friend who works at Radio City Music Hall. But I don’t. I know who she is because she was on Big Brother. Season 2, the one with Evil Dr. Will, still one of the best seasons ever. She came in third and if you’re a fan, she’s the one who used to scream, “It’s AWN!” and once, “It’s AWN like hot buttered popCAWN!” Anyway, she was very nice and good-natured for having to stand outside Radio City in a polyester uniform in the 90-degree heat. Season 2 was back in 2001, and she yelled to me, “Girl, if you’re recognizing me still, I must look fantastic!”

So that was fun.

Saturday evening we ended up at Ferd and Lara’s. We visited with friends we haven’t seen in a while, had some excellent food and several beers. We got home late, but all in all it was a very nice weekend. How about you?

Had a very relaxed weekend and it was needed with the past few weeks being so bad and emotionally draining. I took a couple days off to get myself back together again. Tomorrow it’s back to work (blegh).

Went to the ice rink to show Chimps O’Toole his first live exposure to hockey, but instead of hockey, there was only figure skating. He watched it with rapt attention, and really seemed to enjoy it. But the early exposure (he’s 12 weeks old) to figure skating and Barbra Streisand music…

I checked out the Toronto Pride festivities this weekend. It was loads of fun, but then watching drag queens preform always is. We also saw a surprise wedding proposal for a young lesbian couple. It was quite touching. We ended the night with Karaoke (yay!).

Yesterday I checked out the Pride parade. John Barrowman was on one of the floats (he’s in town as a judge on a reality show to pick the next Maria for a Toronto production of Sound of Music). He’s a very pretty pretty man.

I’ve been outgayed by Chips AND Soosan?

I saw a couple movies (The Incredible Hulk and Wanted), and lots of TiVo backlog (Dexter and Gossip Girl).

    Mmmm, John Barrowman.

    Mmmm, Barbra.

i looked for you at eddie, but alas, i did not get to meet freakgirl in person (it would have been my equivalent of meeting monica). eddie totally rocked radio city. i loved how he turned his worst joke of the night ( “badgers can be choosers” ) into a great, improvised bit about new york audiences (the entire place had groaned at his awful pun). i’m guessing your ailments are a direct result of laughing too much…

I have no problem with the Chimp turning out gay, it’s the love of Barbra that will not stand.

krup, I didn’t realize you were going to be at Eddie, too! Too bad we didn’t run into each other. It was a great show.

Friday night - dinner and Yahtzee with the wife.

Saturday - went to a game ranch. Fed deer, sheep, goats, chipmunks, horses, mules, bunnies and squirrels by hand, which is always fun. Watched my wife throw peanuts into a black bear’s mouth for half an hour - I thought she’d never stop smiling. Stared at pumas, foxes, bobcats and coyotes.

Sunday was cookout and loads of pinot grigio at a friend’s house. Watched a killer storm role in. Hungover today.

Saw “Wall-e” Friday night. It was awesome. I cried and cried.

Satruday had an MRI (!) and then did some car shopping and totally fell for the old bait maneuver by a sleazy car salesman who insisted over the phone that they had the exact model of car I wanted on the lot, but whaddya know, once I got there, it had mysteriously vanished! Fell for the bait, but not the switch, and walked.

Micheal, it was a super gay weekend.

(I want to see Wall-E, it looks really good. This Christmas I was joking that robots are the new pirates, and shucks darnit I was right)

I saw Wall-E as well. I was opposed to it for a while because I insisted that he looked sad all the time. But I sucked it up and went. I only cried once so that’s not too bad considering I cry over pretty much everything. I enjoyed it very much. I was very surprised that the children in the audience managed to sit still during the nearly dialogue-free first half. It wasn’t even that bad when about a half hour into the movie it just stopped and they started us from pretty much the beginning again! That was fun haha. But I highly recommend it. He’s such a cutie.

I went and hung out with my spinning friends and spun yarn, then listened to hardwood being installed at my parents’ house, then napped a lot yesterday. I need to slow down before I get burned out on all this excitement!

I just heard on the news that Pride weekend drew in an estimated $99M tourist dollars. Wow! Everyone likes to come to Toronto to be gay, yay! My question…how do they differentiate between tourist dollars and local dollars?

  15. sandra on Monday, June 30, 2008 at 6:57 pm

Maggie, I think they look at an increase in hotel bookings, flights coming into toronto, parking, restaurants, etc., but that’s just my guess.

While in university I used to live at Church and Carlton and the parade definitely gave the city a great vibe. I haven’t been in years but I know a lot of people - gay, straight, some with their kids and dogs - went this weekend and had a blast.

  16. Maggie on Monday, June 30, 2008 at 9:45 pm

I used to go to the parade back when my friend lived at Church and Wellesley, right above a bagel shop that used to be there. So we’d drink on her balcony and watch the parade and then go down and dance in the street and club hop because all the clubs and bars down there would be no cover for the weekend. So. Much. Fun!

Spent the last of the kid-free week going to see Avenue Q in NYC - so funny! Got the kid back on Saturday and snuggled her the rest of the day. Sunday was mellow mall day plus a movie. A good time was had by all.
