Weekend Wrapup

Monday, March 24, 2008 at 09:17am

Did everyone have a nice weekend? Ours was full of food and fun - my two favorite things. Saturday night the geekboy and I decided to do something different and went ice-skating. A hockey rink recently opened about a mile away and they offer public skating when the ice isn’t being used. So we went! I’d only been skating once (about three years ago) and the geekboy hadn’t been since he was a young kid. Didn’t stop us, though. The rink was nearly empty; probably due to the fact that people don’t know it’s there and being the holiday weekend. So we had a lot of room to make mistakes and flail about. It took me a few laps around to find my footing, although as soon as I let my guard down I took a hard fall right on my ass. It still hurts today. The geekboy didn’t fall at all, yay. It was really fun and I hope to return often and become more comfortable on the ice.

Yesterday was Easter Sunday, family dinner, so you know what that means:

spring cupcake
Creme de menthe with pastel nonpareils

easter cupcake
Banana cupcake, buttercream frosting, topped with toasted coconut and a cadbury creme egg

angel lush cake
Angelfood cake with pineapple, cool whip, vanilla pudding, topped with strawberries

Later on that evening, we played poker with my parents. My father’s winning streak at poker has been documented here several times. Last night’s game was particularly exciting as my father was the first out, which never happens, and the geekboy ended up winning the pot! Congratulations!

winner!

And how are you all doing this fine Monday?

    Congrats, GB!

And if you think you might continue skating regularly, I highly recommend investing in your own skates. You’ll be shocked at how much easier it is to stay upright with sharp blades and a little ankle support. It’s a completely different experience.

Also, you should consider a second career as a food stylist. I love the cupcake on the wine glass — so clever!

It’s a martini glass. I’m loving my new food styling hobby. I saw another blog where someone put a cupcake inside a martini glass, which gave me the idea to use an upside-down one as a stand. Now everyone will be doing it! #

The rental skates had SO much ankle support that I felt bruised afterward. I would love it if you guys would come skating with us sometime; I could really use some tips and tricks. I want to learn to skate backward. Skating around and around in the same direction for over an hour made my right hip ache. I wanted to switch directions so I could get an equal workout on both legs.

Also, we celebrated the geekboy’s win with sandwiches from the gourmet deli. WE’RE LIVING HIGH ON THE HOG!

When we used to go to the free skate at the rink when I was a kid, they’d have an intermission where they’d run the zamboni and then when you went back on the ice, you had to skate the other way. I guess they didn’t want our community to be marked by our gargantuan right thighs!

All the food shots look so great! You have a nice backdrop there, the textured wall! And Geekboy looks so cute with all them spoils!

    Gargantuan right thighs, oh noes!

In retrospect, I should have just asked the rink girl if we could switch direction. At one point it was just me, her, the geekboy, and a guy with his very young son who spent the entire time inching around the rink clutching the wall.

You have to tell me where this new rink is. We’ve been using the Bridgewater Sports Arena, but sometimes it’s so crowded there’s no room to skate. The Spawn and I just learned how to ice skate this winter (the Czar’s an old pro), and we’ve really gotten into it.

Speaking of the Spawn, she and I had an awesome mommy-daughter weekend. While the Czar was off introducing Richard Dawkins at the American Atheist convention, she and I took off for NYC. We stayed at the Marriott Marquis (on points, lots o’ points) and they gave us a great high room. Which meant lots of rides on the super-fast glass elevators - whee! We went to the circus at Madison Square Garden on Saturday, for which I scored amazing seats (center of the ring, aisle seats, only ten rows back). At night, we went to the Marriott’s rotating rooftop restaurant and they kindly seated us right by the window, to watch the city whirl by.

Sunday I took a gamble that paid off big. I got into the Cancellation line for The Lion King right when the box office opened - I was second in line. I scored fourth row center orchestra seats at face value! Seats that on eBay or Stubhub are sold for $400 per! So we got to see a matinee and it was a-freaking-mazing! Afterward, we went ice skating at Rockefeller Center, followed by yummy dinner at Rosie O’Grady’s.

    Fun!

GC, World’s Fair Drive. I’ll email you the webpage. Maybe next time you go, I’ll tag along, as long as you promise not to laugh at me.

I think Michael stayed at the Marriott Marquis the first time I met him. The glass elevator nearly gave me a panic attack. GAH!

Sounds like you had an amazing weekend.
