Weekend Wrapup
Monday, March 10, 2008 at 08:32amThis weekend I made two more felted bowls.
They are made with yarn from Dyed in the Wool Handmade. Both bowls came out a bit flimsy, which is my own fault — I should have double-stranded the yarn but I wanted to see how they would stand up with a single strand. And now I know. The small one would be excellent for something like cotton balls or paper clips, etc.
Saturday we had dinner with my parents and brother, which was nice. My dad made these delicious scallops that involved Grand Marnier…seriously yum. We also played two rounds of Trivial Pursuit - the first time was FreakDad/Geekboy against FreakMom/Freakgirl. The second round was Geekboy/Freakgirl against FreakDad/FreakMom. Here’s how that turned out:

Yesterday the geekboy and I went over to the Sugarloaf Craft Festival, which was more fun that I thought it might be. We picked up some rustic pottery soup bowls, a great selection of soup, a couple gifts, and met some really interesting artists.
And you?

Susie on Monday, March 10, 2008 at 8:59 am
Yes, please.
(That would be regarding the bowls — not having you on my Trivial Pursuit team.)
freakgirl on Monday, March 10, 2008 at 9:02 am
You can have the bowls, although I’m not sure you will like them. I am going to make another, more sturdy.
Susie on Monday, March 10, 2008 at 9:13 am
Yes — sturdy is good. Also, I think it would be great to have some bowls made with Maggie’s yarn, because we’re going to be selling some of her yarn and it’s always good to have displays of materials and finished products. I know I (along with many other crafty-types) often buy an object AND the materials to make one myself. I like to use the original object as a model and try to figure out how to design my own version.
Plus, PRETTY.
freakgirl on Monday, March 10, 2008 at 9:17 am
I have two more skeins of Maggie’s yarn to work with, plus I still have some leftover from these two bowls. So that will work out well.

Hooray for Venn diagrams!
Lisa on Monday, March 10, 2008 at 10:01 am
I ain’t gonna knit with Maggie’s yarn no more. (Sorry, souldn’t resist

Those bowls are so darn cute!
I went to see Dr. Jodi on Saturday, and she was just absolutely wonderful! I didn’t want to leave
She said it’s funny that you keep referring people to her, freakgirl, when you need to get your butt in there yourself!
Greater Czarina on Monday, March 10, 2008 at 10:09 am
Oo, those Leonard Mountain soups are really good. I still have a couple in the cupboard from the last Sugarloaf show. Enjoy!
freakgirl on Monday, March 10, 2008 at 10:12 am
You saw Dr. Jodi? How funny. I just updated her website this morning. She’s been giving me shit about not going to see her! I need to make an appointment. Maybe I’ll make one before I go to Florida.
GC - I’m going to make some soup for dinner. Which will also carry over to tomorrow’s lunch. Yay.

Tis past weekend our diabetic cat Lucifer had his first sleepover at Marjon’s folks. Lucifer is not a big fan of loud noises, and apparently they have many, because he spent quite some time in hiding. All in all it went pretty well though, and in 3 weeks they’ll take him for a week while we take a short vacation.
While Lucifer was out, we went out to the other side of the country to have fun with people we met on the interweb. Seriously; the internet is a great place to meet cool people. Even if they suck at Trivial Pursuit.
Last night our city’s water supply broke, which wasn’t solved until 10 am. Marjon works out of town and took a shower at work, but at my job everyone was asked to go home for hygiene reasons. So I just checked all systems were up and running and went home.
And just now we discovered that the water damage in our kitchen is not covered by our insurance, which sucks.
freakgirl on Monday, March 10, 2008 at 10:44 am
Is this the damage from your neighbor’s faulty roof or whatever? Not covered? What the hell? Can your insurance company sue the building’s insurance company? I’m sorry.
Glad you had fun with your new interwebs friends. They probably could beat me at Trivial Pursuit.
Maggie on Monday, March 10, 2008 at 11:04 am
Leonard Mountain soaps? Do they give movie reviews while you bathe? Ba-dum bum. Try the veal.
I can’t for the life of me remember what yarn that is! They striped beautifully! I should spin up thicker yarn for felting, because if you double stranded that, it would have ended up variegated instead of striped.
Susie, I’m sure you already know, but the yarn you have of mine to sell is superwash, it doesn’t felt!
Debbie, I’ll have more yarn for you when you come! I will give you handspun as prizes if you do well at Rock Band.
Ivon, I can’t believe this leaky kitchen debacle is still going on, after all these years. AAAAAAGH! I can’t imagine how frustrated you both must be.
I met all my bestest friends on the internet!
freakgirl on Monday, March 10, 2008 at 11:10 am
Leonard mountain SOUPS, dork.
Good joke, though.
You gave me that yarn a long time ago; I think you dyed it with Kool Aid. The other yarn you gave me on your last trip - that will felt, yes?
I am going to clear your ass OUT in Rock Band, mark my words.
maddie on Monday, March 10, 2008 at 11:12 am
Cutest bowls ever! Can’t wait until I can buy one!
This weekend was pretty uneventful, except for one exciting thing - I was bummed out because I couldn’t go to my college friend’s wedding in PA in April because I couldn’t afford it at all, having a crappy-paying job and living all the way in FL. Out of nowhere, my friends called on Saturday and said they were all chipping in and paying for my trip up there. It’s so awesome when your friends’ generosity surprises you.
Maggie on Monday, March 10, 2008 at 11:25 am
Ahhhhh! Now I remember what yarn that is! It’s not handspun – it’s fingering-weight yarn! No wonder the bowls are flimsy, ha ha ha!
freakgirl on Monday, March 10, 2008 at 11:27 am
Heh, what do I know? Nothing, obviously.
I think if I doubled it, it would be okay. How about the other yarn?
maddie - that’s so nice.
Amy on Monday, March 10, 2008 at 11:32 am
Totally ready for those bowls to go on sale! Love them. Get crackin’. ;-)
freakgirl on Monday, March 10, 2008 at 11:33 am
Heh. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, I guess), for now you will have to purchase them through Susie’s soon-to-open store in NJ.
Maybe at some point I’ll do the etsy thing, though.
Maggie on Monday, March 10, 2008 at 1:14 pm
I wasn’t laughing at you, dork. I was laughing at myself, because I am incapable of recognizing my own work. Also, because I’m glad that my handspun didn’t felt flimsily (word?)!
Yeah, if you had held that yarn double, it would have been a just a touch thicker than worsted, perfect for felting. That yarn was the undyed Bare yarn from Knitpicks from a while back…they’ve changed the base yarn and the new stuff isn’t nearly as nice as that old stuff.
freakgirl on Monday, March 10, 2008 at 1:20 pm
Feel free to laugh at me! See, you would have picked it up and thought, “Oh, fingering weight; won’t felt very sturdy.” I know nothing!!!! They are still pretty, though.
As for not recognizing your own yarn, that is kind of funny. But you did it so long ago!
So, I will double up on this and get a variegated color instead of stripes, yes?
Maggie on Monday, March 10, 2008 at 1:45 pm
Yes. It will look mottled, but still very pretty.
Just an FYI to people who like felting things…I just got an order of a nice weight of feltable yarn that I’m dyeing up, and I’ll be making a felted pattern/yarn kit for sale in my shop at some point soon.
Susie on Monday, March 10, 2008 at 7:23 pm
Maggie — yes, actually I realized that after I typed my post. It would still be good to make some kind of display, though…
Oh, and I want some of your feltable yarn! I’ve been on a huge felting kick lately.
Bianca on Monday, March 10, 2008 at 10:47 pm
Hey - I read this magazine called Bust and they’re having a spring “Craftacular” in Brooklyn next month. I just got the notice about it today so it’s fresh in my mind. You should totally apply with your awesome yarn-ables.

freakgirl on Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at 7:21 am
I love Bust - have a subscription. I’d like to go to the Craftacular, but not as a seller. Just a shopper!
Bianca on Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at 10:31 am
I used to subscribe as well. I’m thinking I should again since I just buy every issue anyway haha.
