Weekend Wrapup
Monday, March 03, 2008 at 08:24amHow was your weekend, all? Ours was pretty mellow…Lisa and I kicked it off Friday night and quite overdid it out in New Brunswick (with the geekboy as our driver). Saturday was spent recovering, doing laundry and looking at the teevee. The geekboy and I watched The Namesake, and I just loved it. Really enjoyed it. I’m continuing to read my latest library book, and the only transformation I’ve had so far is that I constantly crave italian food.
Yesterday I put in a drugstore.com order (oh, my life, it’s so exciting) and ordered some of that mascara with tuble-y goodness. Treadmilled, watched Rock of Love, snuggled with Meena. And you?

Overdid it, indeed. So hungover on Saturday. But it was FUN getting there! Thanks, kids! And extra thanks to the Geekboy for driving our drunk asses home!

I liked The Namesake as well, especially the performances by the actors playing the parents.
Friday night I went to the movies to see Penelope with my mom. It didn’t get very good reviews, but I loved it. It was really sweet and funny, and James McAvoy is adorable in it!
The rest of the weekend, I watched dvds of My So-Called Life, sat on the couch, and then took my grandmother all over Sarasota shopping. GORGEOUS weather.

Saturday, took my daughter to ballet class, then helped a friend “edit” her wardrobe closet, then took daughter to a Princess party that was very girly and cute….Sunday morning got a phone call that my husband’s grandpa died (he was 90, chief operating officer of NYPD in the 70’s—very sweet, had a good life), had mommy/daughter day at the salon (very happy w/my new ‘do—sideswept bangs—yay!), made dinner, watched some local PBS show about the history of Allentown, PA, collapsed in bed! Good weekend other than grandpa—–RIP!

I too loved The Namesake. Definitely recommend reading the book as well - it flushed out each character a lot more and was incredible - I craved spicy food the entire time. One of those rare instances where both the book and movie are equally incredible. I can’t wait to see if that’s the case with the movie version of The Time Traveller’s Wife.

I test drove cars on Friday, even though it’s not practical or necessary that I change cars right now. I just needed to get it out of my system, only when I returned to the dealership, the saleswoman suggested that I’d have to take the car home to really get the feel of it. So, though I had no intention of buying it, it was gorgeous and I was under its thrall, so I agreed. Was that wrong? And how depressing that this was the highlight of my weekend?
Otherwise, I was reading In Defense of Food and watching Mad Men off the TiVo.
Add my voice to the “loved The Namesake” chorus. As for The Time Traveler’s Wife, I’m approaching it with the same mix of giddiness/apprehension that I do every movie version of a book I love. After Atonement and No Country for Old Men, I feel like I’m on a good roll, though!

Michael, what kind of car???

I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I loved the book. We read it for reading group and it spurred us to read Dead Souls by Gogol as our next selection.
I worked like a maniac on the store all weekend. I spent yesterday painting picture molding and I’m completely sore today, but YAY! We’re almost there.

Susie, I’m so excited for you!

I hosted a baby shower for my friend Cyndi who is due in 17 days. I had pink decorations everywhere - pink flowers, pink ribbon, pink popcorn, pink balloons, pink Chinese-take out boxes full of pink candy-coated chocolate. She knows it is a girl and Cyndi herself is very much a pink-loving freak. We had cheese fondue and the plan was to also have chocolate fondue, but we just ran out of time and settled on the fruit platter and mounds of homemade chocolate-chip cookies. There were many mommy boobies around as there has been a baby boom within my circle of friends - I’m a minority! A lot of work but a lot of fun.

It was one of these: http://tinyurl.com/2bprlh
Out of my price range, which is why I felt guilty taking it, but she offered, and it is like a Japanese engineered cocoon (if cocoons came with 297hp and 260 ft-lbs of torque).

Nice!

Had dinner with ex-colleagues on Thursday and Friday. Had a horrible phone call with friend in Norway. Still upset about that. Went to a lot of diy stores on Saturday to find something to repair our bathroom window with, because our cleaning guy broke it. Had a headache on Sunday. This weekend will not be on my list of great weekends.

Took care of poor, sick hubby all weekend while the Spawn ran off on playdates. As a family, we watched Return of the Jedi, so now my wee offspring has seen the entire original trilogy. My duty as a geek momma has been fulfilled!

Did the Czar get that awful flu-type nastiness that’s going around?
I’ve avoided it so far…

How did the Lesser Czarita respond to the Ewoks?

I watched a boatload of Battlestar Galactica on DVD, but watching Rock of Love on Sunday always makes me feel good about myself in comparison, no matter how I spent the weekend.
freakgirl on Monday, March 03, 2008 at 2:57 pm
Me, too. How does one get to be 20 years old and have never before heard the National Anthem? Or the word “posterity?”
I guess silicone seeps into the brain.

The boy and I spent Friday recovering from Thursday night’s drinking. Saturday I went to see Michael Clayton and out for a casual dinner. Sunday was errands day and lots of naps with the kittens. So, all in all, a pretty typical weekend.
Where did you and Lisa go on Friday?
freakgirl on Monday, March 03, 2008 at 4:07 pm
Hibachi, then Leap Day cocktails at Catherine Lombardi’s (33% off!), then beers and whatnot at the Court Tavern. It’s always the Court that gets us.
mindy on Monday, March 03, 2008 at 4:57 pm
Apparently, the educational system has fallen apart if those Rock of Love chicks didn’t know the Schoolhouse Rock song of the Preamble. (Apologies to those of you who are now singing it.)
GeekBoy on Monday, March 03, 2008 at 5:02 pm
Mindy, that’s funny. I was in the next room playing a video game as Freakgirl watched Rock of Love while treadmilling … and as I overheard that girl screwing up the Preamble twenty different ways, I was sitting there singing it in my head.
freakgirl on Monday, March 03, 2008 at 5:18 pm
Aren’t those girls a little young (and a little illiterate) to know Schoolhouse Rock? I can’t remember when it stopped running…
GeekBoy, the girl that couldn’t learn the Preamble was that bimbo from “Beauty & The Geek.”
Greater Czarina on Monday, March 03, 2008 at 10:28 pm
Yep, the poor Cza had some way nasty intestinal bug. I’m waiting for my turn. Yay!
Geekboy, she loved her some Ewoks, or rather, “those teddy-bear things.” Here’s a funny thing I didn’t remember — they never are called Ewoks in the movie, They’re never called anything in particular. Weird.
