Weekend Wrapup

Monday, November 26, 2007 at 08:57am

it's a major award

Did you all have a nice holiday weekend? I hope so. We had a lot of fun, a lot of food, and I even got a bunch of Christmas shopping done. Hooray!

vegan pumpkin cupcakes

I made pumpkin chocolate chip cupcakes for Turkey Day dinner, using a recipe from Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World [thanks, Susie!]. They came out very moist and finger-lickin’ good.

turducken

Our host made a turkducken, which was randomly named “turducktastic,” “turkducktacular,” and, (in my opinion), “everything that is right about America.”

yum

I also made roasted sweet potatoes tossed with thyme, blue cheese and pecans. An interesting combo of flavors that ended up tasting very nice.

To keep up the Theme of Food, on Saturday, Lisa came over to partake in the crockpot of turkey chili I had simmering all afternoon. After dinner, we made a giant pot of Curried Carrot Bisque, some of which I froze and some of which we ate for dinner last night. Highly recommended! It was rich and delicious. [thanks, Maggie, for the recipe!]

How exactly does one make turducken? I always thought it would be hard to get the duck to eath the chicken, let alone the turkey to eat the duck immediately thereafter…

    Har har har!

You order it already put together (it’s mostly boneless) and then just cook it. Easy as pie. Mmmm, pie.

Turducken! The cupcakes look awesome, as usual.

And that’s like stuffing at the top of the turducken? Turducken! Now with even more turd!

After you told me about this, I looked it up, and sometimes they fill in the gaps in the turducken…with SAUSAGE.

I NEED those sweet potatoes. You’re gonna force me to cook.

Michael, it was an andouille sausage stuffing and it was unreal.

I wanted to try it, but Michael’s comment gots me not wanting anymore.

but it did make me laugh out loud.

My friend Michelle debones her turkeys, stuffs them, puts them back together and then at carving time, she amazes their guests by carving the boneless turkey.

Michael just has to go stick his sausage everywhere. Sigh.

    Maggie, that’s nuts!

I have never cooked a turkey or anything, for that matter, with bones in it.

  9. Maggie on Monday, November 26, 2007 at 12:52 pm

Really? Like, you’ve never roasted a chicken or cooked a porkchop with the bone in?

  10. freakgirl on Monday, November 26, 2007 at 12:55 pm

    Nope. Scared.

Heh. Pretty much. You know how I am…I don’t like it when my animal flesh resembles an actual animal. I get so squicked out dealing with fat and muscle and bones and chopping and ugh I think I need to go lie down.

What happened to my comment where I asked you if you were scared of the Boney Meat Monster? Your site just ignored me!

Ummm … I might have accidentally deleted that one while I was trying to figure out how to white-list somebody in the spam filter. Oops! #

Oh, that’s okay, who cares. I just wanted to point it out in case it was something WP was inexplicably doing on its own. #

I have had many a turducken, and also a pork turducken which, believe it or not, is a turducken stuffed into a suckling pig.

    I shit you not.

We were making jokes about stuff like that! It exists? Now I know what we’re having for Fourth of July.

Whoa, was that sweet potato dish, like, radioactive or something? Was there a visor and plastic jumpsuit involved?

  18. freakgirl on Monday, November 26, 2007 at 5:54 pm

It was FRESH OUTTA THE OVEN!

  19. The Other Andrew on Monday, November 26, 2007 at 5:59 pm

    Mmmmm, hot nuts.

Freakgirl, indeed it does exist. I think it’s officially called a “Fowl De Cochon.” When I had it a family friend from New Orleans made it, and he brought the thing over on a plane as carry-on baggage. Pre 9/11, of course. I like to think the seat next to him was open, and he strapped it in like an infant.

Wow, my first comment on the new site - yay!

Every time I see/hear of “turducken,” all I can think about is that SNL skit where the restaurant keeps layering and layering foods. “First we wrap it in a pancake, then a pizza, then we pour salsa over it….”

    Food overlays = fun!
