jeez…i wonder if Columbus GLBTQ Pride is insulted they’re mentioned?

See, I don’t think Gawker has it right, either. It’s not about processed food and cupcakes in a cup. It’s not about the secret eater who orders too much and scarfs it down in their car. It’s about inactivity and our computerized, mechanized culture. We have so much assistance to do the simplest tasks now. It’s about getting so wrapped up in things online that we neglect things in real life. I thought that’s why all the people floating around were talking to their screens, and only when their screens got shifted away from in front of their faces did they realize there was a world around them. It’s not about being fat or lazy. It’s about being isolated and unconnected.

Exactly, Maggie. The way it’s presented, obesity is just a byproduct of inactivity, and everybody is EQUALLY FAT. Once again, the irony of the plot is that the robots have all different sizes and shapes and personalities, but if you squint, the humans all look pretty much the same, the way very young infants do … which is another part of the message — that like babies, these overly dependent humans literally have to learn to walk again.

Seriously, do they just not bother teaching metaphors in school any more?

I completely agree with Maggie and the Geekboy.

I mean, how are people missing the message here? In every Pixar movie, someone or something (or a group of somethings) leave their home, learn something, and come back smarter and more independent.

Also, in no way were any of the humans presented as anything other than pleasant people. This was not a judgemental commentary about obesity.

I don’t know how anyone who saw the film could have missed the message of Wall-E. That film was about as subtle as a Mack truck.

Some people live to be insulted and offended. I’m a fan of insulting and offending them.

  10. Suz on Friday, July 11, 2008 at 4:24 pm

Forget about the obese…what about the cupcake?!!!?!!!
Aren’t you at all offended by them reducing the magestic and tasty art form of the cupcake into a mindless, liquid consumable? Somebody needs to stand up and write a letter defending the cupcake - they aren’t just sugar, you know. #

Suz, actually, that did make me mad.

  12. Maggie on Friday, July 11, 2008 at 4:44 pm

Yeah, but “cupcake in a cup” is a hysterical concept. It’s already in a cup! Oh that crazy irony!

  13. freakgirl on Friday, July 11, 2008 at 4:49 pm

People sell cupcakes in jars on etsy. Which is not a cupcake. It’s cake in a jar.

  14. Maggie on Friday, July 11, 2008 at 5:15 pm

Yeah, you mean Big Daddy, right? And they’re going on and on as though no one has ever baked a freaking cake in a jar before; Martha (I should say, her creative staff) has been baking cakes in jars and flowerpots and all kinds of contraptions forever.

  15. Maggie on Friday, July 11, 2008 at 5:17 pm

Whoops, I meant Fat Daddy. Whatevs. I’m still going on about Big Daddy Day Care. Heh.

  16. Jason on Friday, July 11, 2008 at 6:07 pm

As a big fat guy myself, I just can’t muster up the energy to get all offended by this. Now can I get the Artie Lange cupcake in liquid form please?

But seriously, to my fellow people packing the extra pounds who have their plus sized panties in plus sized knots over this, have some perspective here! We’ve still got almost a half a year left of Bush and company destroying our country and an election coming up where it’s more of the same vs less, and you people are all worked up over a damn cartoon? Remember when the Islamic world went postal over cartoons and what a bunch of asshats they looked like because of it? Don’t be like that. Please.

I want to comment but I’m not sure what this is about. What does it all mean? Am I dumb? I think I will trade in cupcakes for liquid beer in the future. Oh beer is already liquid. I heard a guy in the Back Ops say Bush hates beer. as Nacy Kerrigan used to say….why!!!!!????????

    Hi Debbie

Hi (it’s been awhile since I’ve been on here due to family issues) . #
My daughter and I went to see the movie last week . We loved it.
It is stupid of some people take a simple little movie and try to read something into it that the movie was NOT about
I thought the movie was sad because we / humans trash(ed) the earth.
How gross is food in a cup (LOL–yuck)?
