Vegas, Baby

Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 09:18am

Tomorrow morning at the asscrack of dawn, we leave for Vegas. We’ll be gone ’til next week and we’re not bringing our laptop, so you will be on your own. I’ll open up a thread in the morning for you all to play in while we’re away. Maggie will keep the peace if you children get out of control. Anyway, I’m very excited about our trip! We’ll only be gone six days, so I hope we get to do everything we’re planning. We’ve got Vegas, some gambling, some poolside lounging, some excellent food, the Liberace museum and general Vegas people-watching. Then off to Arizona where we intend to see the Grand Canyon, some ghosts, Route 66, Sedona, red rocks, and hopefully some other off-the-beaten path types of things. Then, back to Vegas for one night where the geekboy and I hope to be propositioned, Indecent Proposal-stizz. Otherwise, how the hell are we going to pay for this trip?

Can’t go wrong with Collichio, but HOLY CRAP is that place expensive!! But it’s vacation, so what the heck, right?

What are ya’lls pleasures on the gambling front? Please don’t say “just slots”!!

  2. freakgirl on Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 9:34 am

It’s vacation. We’re such beer-and-pizza people we decided to do one decadent dinner. I hope it lives up to the hype!

Neither of us are gamblers, really. Sorry to tell you, I like slots. I can also sit at those stupid nickel poker machines for hours. This time I hope to play some blackjack, though. I have a fear of tables; I’m always frightened I will fuck up someone’s game. Any tips?

ooh, Craft, I’m jealous!! I never had much interest in going to Vegas, ’cause I hate gambling. But the food! the lights! Thomas Keller has a restaraunt there, too. Everybody has a restaraunt there! I gotta go. Anyway, have tons of fun!!!

maybe watch “lost in america” before you leave…..you sound like you could be a borderline julie hagerty type person! ; )

  5. Chuck on Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 9:53 am

From the sounds of it, and knowing you, my tip would be to skip blackjack all together. It’s a very intemidating game if you’re inexperienced, people can be assholes, and the attention is always focused on you and what you’re doing - too much pressure. What you need to do is head straight to the craps table. Google the basics and learn maybe, 4 simple bets you understand. It’s really not so complicated if you keep it simple, and is hands down, the most fun game in gambling. There’s no quiet deliberation and attention on yourself that you get in blackjack. Everyone throws down their bets at once, so no one knows or cares who is betting what. Many more people are involved, you’re standing up, there’s no way to fuck up someone else’s bet, and if you start rolling hot dice, you’ll feel like the prom queen. Extremely fun game.

    Have fun!!

I do not understand craps. I try. I read about it, I play it on our PSP. Nothing makes sense. It’s like as soon as I begin to try to understand how to play, my brain completely shuts down. Waaaaaaaaah.

When I was there last summer we happened to wander into and eat at Stack at the Mirage… because it looked like a neat place. And now I recommend it to everyone I know. We also splurged for the Beatles Love show also at the Mirage and it was amazing. I also tell everyone to stop by the Paul Frank Store because who doesn’t love Paul Frank?

  8. freakgirl on Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 10:08 am

Where is the Paul Frank store?

  9. Chuck on Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 10:13 am

Jeez Lousie. Nickel poker it is.

  10. Lauren on Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 10:25 am

Their is a giant mall, I think it’s the Fashion Show Mall… It’s 3200 Las Vegas Blvd. But the entrance to the Paul Frank Store is outside, you don’t even have to go in the actual mall. Instead of gambling last time I was in Vegas I blew all my money there. But I got to go home with all sorts of neat prizes!

If that fails, put everything on black!

  12. Sara on Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 10:33 am

What about roulette? I always observe a table first just to get a feel for the other players. Then if I feel comfortable I’ll sit down when someone leaves.
    Have fun!

Have a great time (but of course your freaknieces would rather you come here)!!!

    Vacation
    All I ever wanted
    Vacation
    Had to get away

Jealous! I don’t have a strong urge for Vegas, but with VOUS as the cruise director, I’d be on board….ghosts….Liberace…..Route 66 kitsch…poolside. And now I’m trying to wrap my brain around a $184 8 oz Kobe “Platinum” Filet Mignon. How good must that be?

    Have a great time, chilluns!

  15. Michael on Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 10:42 am

Oh, is Bette playing there yet?!

  16. Rona on Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 10:48 am

Roulette is soooo easy, and if you find a fun table (or make it fun) it’s a blast. No one is playing against anyone, so you don’t get that type of asshole.
You’ll spend a lot of time checking out the other hotels, which was more fun than I expected. I LOVED the Hard Rock, b/c the casino was so much more my level. You didn’t get the old degenerates who’ve wheeled themselves up to gamble away their day and not speak to anyone. Plus, the music was awesome, as was the Sangria in the Pink Taco!
    Have a great time!

  17. Rain on Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 10:57 am

If you feel the urge to do a buffet, go to the Bellagio. All you can eat Kobe beef! And big ass crab legs!

I sure hope Craft is better than his ‘wichcraft restaurants. If I’m going to pay 12 bucks for a sandwich, I’d at least like it to be bigger and tastier than something I could get at the corner deli.

  18. Chips O'Toole on Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 11:00 am

“sangria at the pink taco.” make your own jokes.

when are you gonna go to Sedona? i might be up around there visiting inlaws sometime soon. If you have time, drive the 20 miles to Jerome, and old mining town on Mingus Mountain.

like m&m’s? go to the store, just north of the MGM, let me know what you think.

  19. Maggie on Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 11:14 am

Ooh, freakniece guilt from the evil sister! #

Have a good time! And if anyone gives me grief around here, I’m cracking skulls.

Have fun! Though I’d like to do Vegas one day I’m more interested in your Arizona trip. Jay’s parents went there and drove through it up into New Mexico and loved it, though they love that whole old wild west thing. One day Jay and I hope to go down to South Dakota and the Black Hills and visit Deadwood.

    Have a great trip, kids!

Also, a word of unsolicited advice: never play on any video machine with less than the full bet. My first trip to Vegas I was losing at quarter video poker, got down to my last quarter credit in the machine, and just hit “deal”. Whereupon I naturally hit the royal flush, and my not having put another dollar in the machine cut my winnings back to, “I guess it’s a nice dinner,” from what could otherwise have been, “Awwyeah, let’s get us a movin’ on up suite!”

  22. GeekBoy on Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 12:02 pm

Chips, thanks for the tip. Since we’re staying up in Williams, it might make sense for us to do the 89 loop from Williams to Sedona to Jerome, and back around to Williams again. So if you know of anything else worth looking at on that loop, let us know.

  23. Chuck on Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 12:35 pm

You’re staying in Williams? I got HAMMERED at a bar there about 15 years ago called The Sultana - it was awesome. A great, great dive that I highly recommend.

  24. Chuck on Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 12:38 pm

I just googled The Sulatana to see if it was still around it and this is what I found…

This establishment’s big claim to fame is that it holds the state’s longest continuous liquor license, but that is not the only reason to drop by this historic property. Though it may not be as globally renowned as the name suggests, this has long been one of Williams’ favorite neighborhood watering holes, providing a place for folks to congregate for a few games of shuffleboard.

  25. GeekBoy on Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 1:06 pm

Shuffleboard? We are so there. #

  26. freakgirl on Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 1:44 pm

Chuck, Friday night around 10:00pm, think of me. I will be at the Sultana, hammered, playing shuffleboard.

I wonder if I could bribe someone there to let me watch the Sopranos finale on Sunday…

  27. freakgirl on Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 1:48 pm

Oh, and Jen, when I play any of the video games, I always do max bet.

I never win any money anywhere, though. But I guess I’ll try more this time.

Michael, not sure if Bette is there yet, but I know Pammy Anderson just started some gig as a magician’s assistant. WTF.

To be honest, I’m just hoping to run into Rosie or Cyndi Lauper at the pool on Friday, as they’ll be rolling into town for the True Colors tour. #

  28. Chuck on Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 2:17 pm

Very jealous. Shuffle a game for me. And do a shot of bourbon.

  29. Michael on Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 2:38 pm

True Colors! Any chance of seeing that?!?! I still love that song, True Colors, but my bitch of a sister almost ruined it for me by gently singing it to me whenever I go into self-pity mode.

Did you see the pictures of Pam as that Siegfried/Roy-looking magician’s assistant? I thought she had those things reduced? Ridiculous.

  30. kyle on Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 3:00 pm

‘Let It Ride’ is a simple table game, and you’re not really playing against anyone else.

  31. El Gato on Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 3:58 pm

Have a great trip! I wouldn’t mind heading out there sometime, but Mrs. Gato refuses to go as long her relatives are living there #

  32. freakgirl on Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 4:04 pm

    :: whispers ::

Both the geekboy and I have relatives there.

  33. GeekBoy on Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 4:10 pm

    :: whispers ::

Who will NOT know we’re in town.

Unless, of course, one of us gets arrested for some reason. In which case, we will name drop our relatives — several of which are cops — every chance we get. #

  34. freakgirl on Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 4:14 pm

I wouldn’t mind seeing my cousin. I just get really selfish when I’m on this kind of vacation and don’t like making plans out of family obligation.

  35. Marjon on Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 5:23 pm

    Have fun in Vegas.
Oh, and Maggie won’t be of much use as of Thursday, because she’ll be drunk and hanging out with us drunks. ;-)

  36. freakgirl on Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 5:45 pm

    Even better. Drunken international blogging!

  37. Maggie on Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 6:01 pm

I’m just pissed that you’ll be gone when they’re here because I was hoping I could call YOU in the middle of the night for a change. :O

  38. freakgirl on Tuesday, June 05, 2007 at 6:22 pm

“For a change.” As if every night, I’m calling your ass up. Or am I? #

    You have my cell #!
