Vacation Packages to Dublin

The geekboy and I are thinking of a weekend trip to Dublin, Ireland around the end of April. We’d leave on a Wednesday night, arrive in Dublin on Thursday morning, and fly home on Sunday. Anyone have recommendations for package deals or advice on finding the best prices? We want to stay in the Temple Bar area.

  1. That short???? Unless you find SUPER cheap flights, that’s a huge waste of money. I’d book the Mon-Wed off & go for 9 days.

  2. I don’t get paid when I’m not working. And the geekboy has limited vacation time.

And people do weekend trips all the time. I know it’s pricey, but I feel like spending another five days means another five days of hotel fees, meals, sightseeing and cab fare. And nine days in Dublin is way too long. Am I wrong?

  3. I went there Wed night – Sunday 2 years ago, and it was fun. My roommate from college lives just North of Dublin (Port Marnock) so I didn’t have to pay hotel fees.
Most places she took me to, though, she mentioned over and over how much more beautiful they are in the Spring and Summer, with everything in bloom. Still, it was gorgeous.
9 days would be too long, probably, unless you travel around the country.

  4. People from here do NYC for the same amound of days, same thing. I don’t know Dublin, so no tips from me.

  5. Lisa and I spent two weeks driving around Ireland in the summer a few years ago. I was looking to just do a city trip for the weekend. April is still off-season, so prices are a bit cheaper. I found a package WITHOUT airfare that included the hotel stay (a well-rated place right in Temple Bar), breakfast, one dinner at the oldest pub in Dublin, and two walking tours (historical tour and literary pub crawl). That was $450/person. But airfare on top of that…may be too much money.

  6. You’re always welcome to fly to Amsterdam and stay with us :). We don’t charge anything for it.

  7. That is actually a compelling idea. Let me mull it over!

  8. I’ll meet ya’ll there.

  9. I have often thought of doing a weekend trip, but the second I would start factoring in things like airfare (or if the airfare was cheap), hotels, and then taxes, food, etc., it would never be worth it money-wise. Sure, it would be fun but I couldn’t just let go of the fact that it would be a mortgage payment gone for a weekend trip. But that’s just me! If you are OK with that, go! That being said, if you’re looking for a short cheap trip, you should totally visit Marjon and Ivon!

  10. I’ll get on it. Deals are out and about. I’ll check after I get Echo to sleep.

  11. The very first plane ride I can afford will be one that goes to the Netherlands!

I think a weekend trip to Ireland sounds great if you don’t mind the plane ride. Have fun!

  12. No specific advice about flights, but I’ll second some who say it’s not too short. I flew to London on a Thursday and back on a Monday. It was fun!

(Although I distinctly remember the ticket being less than $400….was it 1974?)

So is that offer to stay with the Dutch “come one, come all?”

  13. I don’t think it is too short a time to go to Ireland. Especially if you consider that the flight in about the same as going to California. That being said, right now prices for airfare are so crazy I could see it being cost prohibitive.

  14. Yeah, most roundtrip tix I can find are in the $600 range.

Starting to think about a cruise instead. Honestly, the two of just want to get away together.

  15. Might I suggest BC? Vancouver Island or the mainland is lovely. It may be rainy in April, but mild enough. Plus, our Canadian dollar is pretty dang low, so better bang for your Yankee buck.

Or, closer to home is Montreal or Quebec City.

  16. I vote for Tortola.

  17. In my perfect, money-is-no-object world, we could all go there as a family, sis!

  18. I’m totally enamored with the idea of cruises. I’ve always wanted to go. One day we should do it together.

  19. That would be really fun. Beth’s family does a lot of cruises. There is certainly something appealing about just having everything right there, and being spoiled and lazy and poolside for a few days.

  20. I’ve never had any interest in cruising (ahem), but a friend invited me to go along on a Big Gay Baltic Cruise, which is just so OPPOSITE of me that I’m sorely tempted.

  21. I second the idea of Montreal, so I can live vicariously through you. I’ve never been, but I’ve heard it’s like having a European city close to home. It’s a shame to waste your precious vacation days flying and dealing with jet lag.

  22. We have friends that visited Quebec this past spring, so I will ask them about their experiences.

I think as of right now, here’s what we’ve decided to do. The geekboy is going to put in for his vacation. Then about 4 weeks before we plan to go, we’ll check the last-minute websites. I’ve seen some good deals on European getaways if you book last-minute. And if we don’t find anything, we’ll drive somewhere.

  23. The New York Times has a really good travel section. The costs are redonk, but at least it has good ideas for itineraries. Have you looked at AAA?

  24. I haven’t looked at AAA lately, as I rarely find good deals through them. Also, do they do international?
