Tipping the Driver
Friday, December 09, 2005 at 12:09pmOur local grocery just started using Peapod home delivery. We got a big fat coupon to try it out, so we’re going to. Have any of ya’ll ever used it? How much does one tip the driver?

My college roommate swears by it - she’s frugal too. Convenience that eliminates costs due to impulse shopping = greatest service ever.
freakgirl on Friday, December 09, 2005 at 12:57 pm
Ask her how much she tips.
luscious loulou on Friday, December 09, 2005 at 12:57 pm
Tip?
5 bucks on a $100 delivery. Whaddya think?
I tip my hairdresser a fiver on a $20 trim. But that’s my Hair!

Maybe tipping on a per-bag basis? I don’t think the cost of the grocery really has anything to do with it…you’re tipping the guy for carrying the stuff to your door, right?
I don’t know.
I want groceries delivered to me. I’m not good at shopping at the store. I’m a total impulse grocery buyer. Especially if I shop while hungry.

This place is near us: http://www.vincesmarket.com/
They deliver. I should try them at least once.

Yeah, we’re thinking it might save us money on impulse buys. But I noticed, at least with the order I placed today, that the site doesn’t have as full an inventory as the actual store. It would make my life complete if our grocery stores sold wine and beer but, alas, they don’t.

I tried it once or twice and really liked it. It’s great if you don’t have a lot of time to shop. Eventually I realized that I rather enjoy grocery shopping at 3AM, so I stopped using the service, plus it made me feel lazy. Not sure on the tip though.

My mother swears by it and does all her grocery shopping on Peapod. I have a hard time with it because I need to be in the store and see the products to remember what I need. But then I’m odd.
I found them to be more expensive than the stores near me, but not dragging a million bagss in the house might make up for it.

I enjoy picking out my own fruit and veggies too much, plus I live a mile from the best Farmer’s Market in the world, so it’s easy for me.
luscious loulou on Friday, December 09, 2005 at 2:46 pm
So Chuck, you’re a Vancouver boy then are you?
Hah.
marjon on Friday, December 09, 2005 at 4:13 pm
They do deliver groceries here too, but it doesn’t feel right. We’ve never used it.

I love love love Peapod! I get diet coke delivered to me at the office (yeah, so what?) and I get kitty litter (among other things) delivered to me at home. No more carrying heavy stuff! It’s great when I’m having a party, then I don’t have to carry all of that alcohol and soda and ice (but mostly alcohol).
I generally tip $10 for my orders (which are about $100). They say on the website that no tip is expected, but come on.
freakgirl on Friday, December 09, 2005 at 6:37 pm
$10 sounds very appropriate, Sandy. I think that’s what we’ll do.

Loulou - I checked out the Vancouver market - looks AWESOME. Very much like ours, except ours is bigger with more stuff and has been around longer.
Hah.
luscious loulou on Saturday, December 10, 2005 at 11:41 am
Bigger and longer, eh?
::yawn:: Oh, you guys.

We used to do Peapod when we lived in DC. I don’t recommend them for produce, but for everything else they’re great. We’d always tip $5.
Michael on Sunday, December 11, 2005 at 2:38 pm
I appreciate bigger and longer as much as the next gay, but I ADORED the Granville Island Market. We roamed around there for lunch and shopping and whatever on a few afternoons off from skiing. I really love Vancouver. It’s so vibrant and international and rainforest-y. Peapod would be great for everything except the produce, where I’m again like Chuck and want my hands on it. Chuck, you don’t have a strangely single brother, do you?
Chuck on Monday, December 12, 2005 at 8:46 am
I do have a brother and he is even thinner and more handsome than I am, but alas he is a republican suburbanite married with two kids. So yes, he’s very much gay.
