  1. That link really highlights the hypocrisy of the people who use the Bible to condemn ___________ (fill in the blank).

  2. Too bad hypocrisy’s one of them highfalutin college words used only by the Liberal Elite Bitch Squad, else maybe we could have the national conversation about it that we clearly so desperately need.

  3. There’s also a wee bit of hypocrisy regarding plucking Bible verses at random and out of context.

I think the anonymous author of this letter skipped over some sections. That’s worse than not reading it at all…

  4. I think not reading it at all is awesome, so pretty much everything is worse than that.

  5. But if someone else wants to live their life based on a Bronze Age text that’s been relentlessly edited by people for thousands of years, I say, “Go for it!”

  6. Does anyone sane really think there’s an acceptable context for allowing slavery or killing queers?

  7. Perhaps “sane” was a bad word choice, but then again, taking a pro-slavery or pro-queer-killing position as “moral” or “ethical” would seem to situate a person firmly within the bounds of psychopathy.

  8. By the way, mchenrmd, I posted that link tongue in cheek. I don’t care if Wal-Mart sells bibles. That’s not even a blip on the radar of Things That Suck About Wal-Mart.

It seems that you don’t have much of a sense of humor.

  9. I probably took it too seriously as well, but sometimes I feel overwhelmed by how relentlessly this book is used to marginalize and subjugate and diminish people. Or raise them up, of course, if they’re the chosen sex/race/religion/sexuality.

But if we’re gonna follow it, let’s follow it then. If the government is gonna take my basic rights away based on a few words in that book, I say we also start stoning adulterers. Let’s see how they vote on that.

I wish that a few of the people who blindly follow the bible would take a few minutes and look into who actually wrote it, when, and how often it’s been altered over the centuries based on the whims of those in power at the time.

  10. Sweetie, you can’t reason with people who blindly follow anything. They’ve categorically rejected reason.

  11. “I think the anonymous author of this letter skipped over some sections. That’s worse than not reading it at all…”

mchenrmd, isn’t the point of the satire here that this is exactly what many fundamentalist “Christians” do — “skip over” some sections of the Bible in favor of others? Ironically, many of the more dogmatic “Christians” out there skip over the sections that actually involve Jesus Christ (a.k.a. The New Testament) and his good works/examples in favor of the Old Testament sections that deal more in fear, exclusion, judgment, and persecution.

At least the writer of this piece was trying to be funny, instead of, you know, burning somebody at the stake or passing amendments to take away somebody’s civil rights. Although I’m sure some theocons find those things funny too.

  12. Oh, and I doubt there was anything “random” at all about the verses this author chose to pluck out. ;)

  13. I posted that link tongue in cheek. I don’t care if Wal-Mart sells bibles.

Ya mean I signed the thing for nothin’? :)
As far as I’m concerned, any blow against Wal-Mart is a blow for the American people!

  14. I’ve said it before, i’ll say it again. God hates shrimp.

as for editing the bible, there was a great interview with a biblical scholar on npr a while back that is worth a listen:

  15. I work for Walmart, HOW DARE YOU!

Heh, just kidding. I’ll do anything to bring my employer down.

  16. Sorry, but I have read this late. The last time I read the Bill of rights there was an admendment that said we had freedom of religion. I personally do not read the bible, but nor do I put down, make fun of, or care that other people do. I have personally never heard anyone use ther bible as a reson for the murder of anyone, esp. Wal-Mart employees. I can honestly say this is the wierdest and craziest thing I had ever read. My opinion: whomever started this letter needs help immendiately!

  17. Perhaps you should research the Crusades, the Salem Witch trials, the Spanish Inquisition, violence at US abortion clinics, hate crimes against homosexuals…shall I continue?
