The Pee Wee Herman Show

This weekend we went to see The Pee Wee Herman Show on Broadway. What magical fun! For reals! The show is a hybrid of his Saturday morning tv show and his original stage show from 1981. Even some of the original cast members returned — including Lynne Marie Stewart as Miss Yvonne, who you might know today as Charlie’s Mom on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The show had all my old favorites, like the Penny cartoon, the Mr. Bungle film, and the SECRET WORD!
If I had any complaint, I’d say that Paul Reubens seemed a bit low-energy during our performance. But can you blame him? He’s the entire show and does it, what, six or eight times a week? I’m just so happy they brought the show to NYC for a while. The glaring missing piece, of course, was the late Phil Hartman as Captain Carl. The new show eliminates his character altogether (as well as Monsieur LeCroc, the puppet he voiced), which is a nice tribute to Mr. Hartman but very sad nonetheless. He is missed.
We finished our day and evening with drinks at the Algonquin, and an amazing meal at Lattanzi.

I am so jealous. Also, I didn’t realize that Paul Rubens is almost 60, kind of like the time I asked Matt Groening’s sister if she was his mother, these characters remain stuck in time for me. But damn, that’s a lot of stamina for an old guy.
