The H-BOMB and YOU
Jen sent me a link to this comic book from 1954 that explains the dangers of the H-Bomb. It’s a fascinating piece of propaganda that would be totally at home in today’s political climate of FEAR!FEAR!FEAR! By the way, page 12 is particularly obnoxious.

So by throwing out paper I too can defend my home? Yay! It’s a lot of responsibility, but as the mother of the household, I must rise to it!

I loved all the contradiction of it. Like how the teacher shows the kids this horrid movie and freaks them all out. And then Little Johnny asks, “But in the movie, that H-bomb wiped out most of the city. Won’t everyone be killed?”
And the teacher responds, “No Johnny, don’t ever believe such rumors. That is the kind of talk an enemy would have you believe!”
Meanwhile a handful of pages later the Civil Defense guy comes through and is all, “Loss of life and property damage are sure to be high!” Yeah, after an H-bomb, the big problem is the property damage. “We Americans must get used to the threat of war as a new way of life.”
Gee, I don’t know why kids would be freaked out by that.
