The Geekboy Turns 40

Monday, October 08, 2007 at 08:51am

So yeah, I threw a surprise party for the geekboy over the weekend. I’ve been planning it since early in the summer, and was so glad that Maggie and Jeremy were able to come. Their visit also made him totally clueless about the party; he figured that they were his birthday surprise. I have been so stressed out for the past week or so, hoping that he didn’t find out, hoping that everybody showed up, hoping that the party would go well. Mission accomplished!

It was really tough NOT talking about the party in front of him. On Saturday afternoon, Maggie and I were reduced to typing back and forth on the computer in order to get some last-minute details nailed down. I asked everyone to show up at the restaurant at 7:00pm. Lisa, my friend Laura and my parents showed up early to decorate - THANK YOU!! At home, I told the geekboy that we were going to meet up with Beth for dinner at 7:30pm. Ironically, Beth was one of the few people that couldn’t make it to the party. But he didn’t know that. So we got to the restaurant, I told him we would be meeting Beth at the downstairs bar, and I shoved him into the room, where all his friends (and his mom, who flew up from Florida to surprise him) were standing there, waiting. He was stunned. I wish I could have seen his face.

The restaurant/bar where we had the party was fantastic. If you’re local, I highly recommend it. I bought a dinner package so everyone could have a nice meal (we had penne vodka, chicken marsala, and sausage and peppers), along with salad and potatoes and veggies and all that great stuff. My mom and Randy’s mom got a delish cake from Wegman’s, and also surprised ME by paying for an open bar. Crazy. My mom also put piles of quarters on every table, as the bar had tons of games, pool tables, and pinball machines. It seemed like everyone really enjoyed it, plus we had 80s music playing and the football game on the tv. Something for everyone!

The night went by way too quickly. Later, a few people came back to our house and I got blitzed on gin and tonics. The geekboy opened his gifts, I opened mine (some people were sweet enough to include a birthday gift for me, too!) and then the geekboy put me to bed, and I slept until 11:30am. Yesterday we all just lazed around and watched a marathon of Rock of Love and the boys played Xbox and we ate pizza. Maggie and Jeremy leave this morning and the geekboy is at work and I will be all alone.

After all the stress and excitement of planning for our visitors and having the party, I’m sure today will be somewhat of a letdown. The geekboy thinks I should just spend the day in bed. Heh. I just might do that.

Anyway, Happy Birthday, sweetie. I hope it was the best 40th you ever had! #

BONUS! Over the summer, I asked Jeremy if he could create a comic-book cover for the party invitation. Then I blew it up into a poster and had everyone at the party sign it. I also made it into a t-shirt for the geekboy. He actually slept in it. Jeremy, you are crazy talented. Thank you again.

It was a great party and a real surprise. Right at the end I was ready to explode from the secret-keeping, but we all held it together! Woo! Happy birthday to you both and thanks for the hospitality. It was so nice to get to spend some time with all the Jersey peeps. But now, it’s time for us to get going.

    Bye!

It WAS the best 40th party I ever had! #

It’s actually the first time in my life that I was ever the target of a surprise party. I still can’t believe that after weeks of wondering if you were up to something, I still didn’t see any of the signs and was completely and utterly gobsmacked. I didn’t even know what to do with myself for like the first half hour. I just kept saying hi to people, shaking hands, hugging, and asking, “So how long have YOU known about this?”

Anyway, it was a blast beyond words, and you did a great job with it. Had you asked me if I ever wanted a surprise party, I would have said no, because the shy kid in me generally hates to be the center of attention in any room. But after the fact, it was a wonderful moment to have as I’m turning (have turned) 40, to know that people cared enough to come and that you cared enough to make it happen. It easily goes down as the best birthday party that anybody has ever thrown for me. Thanks again, baby! Love you!

Now you need to post my comic book cover!!!

And then you need to relax for a month. #

Okay, so you posted it …

Thanks, Jeremy (& Maggie, for helping him get the details just right)!!! That cover was certainly the cherry on top, and will be an important item in my (metaphorical) Batcave Trophy Room for the rest of my life.

So glad to hear that the party was a success and so bummed I missed it. Are there pictures???

I took pictures, but they all came out shitty. I’ll pull them from my camera later and see if I can salvage any. The geekboy’s mom brought a bunch of disposable cameras, so I’ll scan those in if I don’t look like a monster in them. Ha!

YAY I’m so happy the surprise worked! Can’t wait to see whichever pictures came out, and that image Jeremy did is brill.

What a great party. Kudos to Freakgirl. The first thing Al said to me as we left was “Freakgirl [okay, he used her real name] did such a good job.”

We had a great time, even if we had to leave early because of Gimpy. I loved seeing Maggie and Jeremy, plus I got Maggie’s beautiful yarn for my shop!

Happy belated birthday to the FreakGeek household. :-)

Fantastic party. The details, like the table decorations, were incredible! You also make a mean g & t. I was hurting yesterday, from just one!

I was hurting yesterday, too. From more than one. Hee hee!

I loved how everything turned out. I took some photos of the tables, too, maybe they came out. After I get a few work-related things done, I’ll try to upload them.

It was a really great party. Quite a coup by the Freakgirl…Geekboy was totally blown away. The food was yummy, the company was great, and much fun was had by all. Well done!

I’m very sorry I had to miss it (and trust me, given what I put myself through the next morning, I HAD to miss it), but am happy the lure of dinner with me was enough to pull off the surprise! #
