The Best Sandwiches in America
Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 09:19amMuch like Joey Tribbiani, my favorite food is sandwiches. Esquire lists the Best Sandwiches in America. I am the kind of person who would plan a vacation using this list as an itinerary. Glad to see the pork roll, egg and cheese made it in! JERSEY REPRESENT!

Sweet Jesus, bring this to me NOW
Reggie Deluxe
Pine State Biscuits, Portland, Oregon
A hangover cure found only at Portland’s Farmers Market (for now): fried chicken, bacon, cheddar, gravy, and an over-easy egg on a cream-top buttermilk biscuit still hot from the outdoor oven. (South Park Blocks, SW Harrison and Montgomery; Saturdays)

I’ve actually had one of the BEST! The brisket sandwich from Zingerman’s in Ann Arbor. It’s too good for this earth.
God, now I’m so hungry.
freakgirl on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 10:38 am
Rona, pregnant much?

You’d probably get a kick out of this GQ blog entry by my friend Alan about my brother-in-law, the self-proclaimed Sandwich King of New York. (Actually, he’s the king of something else, but you’ll have to read the article to find out what.) Also useful — a NYC sandwich guide for you…

Awesome! And Chicken Picnic on a Bun sounds so good I kind of want to cry.
Jason on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 11:24 am
Am I the only one who wants to go on a coast to coast sandwich tour after reading that?
freakgirl on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 11:29 am
Seeing as I wrote “I am the kind of person who would plan a vacation using this list as an itinerary,” in my post, probably not.
We can start on our respective coasts and meet in the middle!
Michael on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 12:08 pm
I’ll be the guy in the middle! The “Lucky Pierre”, if you will. Apt, since it’s sandwiches.
heather on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 12:21 pm
I’m sorry, but I lost all respect for this list when I saw McRib. No.
freakgirl on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 12:29 pm
heather, I tried to ignore the fact that it not only has McDonald’s, but also Chik-fil-a. NO CHAINS!
I’ve never had a McRib and I hope to continue that trend until the day I die.
Chuck on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 12:45 pm
Considering Chik-fil-a invented the chicken sandwich, I’ll give them a pass. Plus, they’re SOOOO delicious.
freakgirl on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 12:51 pm
I’ve never been to a Chik-fil-a, either. We don’t really have them up here.
Chuck on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 1:03 pm
It’s heaven on a buttered bun, trust me.
Soosan on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 1:07 pm
mmmmm Zingermans in Ann Arbor. That place is known for it’s sandwiches! yum yum yum
Great post to read around lunch time when I have no food in my cupboards.
freakgirl on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 1:16 pm
I hear you. I had a meatless chicken patty with some dairy-free cheese and a fistful of pretzel sticks for lunch. Mmm, bland.
Soosan on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 1:39 pm
I just finished off some wheat thins, and now you’ve inspired me to have a beef/soy burger that is made with “processed swiss cheese food and mushrooms”. It’ll have to be bunless sadly, as i’m fresh out ‘o breads.
It sounds gross, but it’s actually really yum.

freakgirl on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 1:42 pm
“swiss cheese food” - yikes.
Enjoy!
Jason on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 2:03 pm
FG, I was so distracted by all that sandwichy goodness I didn’t even pay attention to the rest of your post. The sandwiches made me look like an ass.
I think it’s funny that they included the McRib and Chik Fil A but not a mention of In n Out Burger’s Animal Style Double Double. If I leave now, I can get to In n Out before the crazy lunch rush and be back before the boss misses me.
Lee on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 2:11 pm
Heather–I’m with you on the McRib, but I’d expect that from a group who thinks the best barbecue sandwich can be found in… New Orleans. I’m sure it’s perfectly ok, but, come’on.
Southern States Snubbed! (mostly)
Bianca on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 2:46 pm
I used to insist my boyfriend was making up pork roll because it’s basically impossible to buy in NY so I wrote it off as fantasy. But then we finally managed to locate some and boy is it delicious haha.
Chuck on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 2:48 pm
Not a snub. 6 southern states out of 28 total (didn’t count McDonalds) is almost 1/4. If you divide the country into 4 parts, that’s about right.
I’m just sayin.
freakgirl on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 3:04 pm
Pork roll IS a fantasy. A delicious, delicious fantasy.
Jason, I have never had an In-n-Out Burger. Want.
Chuck on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 3:11 pm
In-n-Out has mobile trucks - on film sets, occasionally they’d hire one out instead of the standard caterer = YUM. But as far as the best burger joint in LA, I’d go with Fatburger over In-n-Out. But hey, that’s just me - I love a burger with chili, cheese, bacon and egg.
On a side note - I wouldn’t include burgers on a sandwich list anyway.
freakgirl on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 3:17 pm
If you’re gonna have a burger with chili, cheese, bacon and egg, then you might as well visit the Rutgers grease trucks. Oh man, it’s been years.

Chuck on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 3:25 pm
I wish I had one of those parked in my driveway.
freakgirl on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 3:45 pm
Me too. We’d be dead in three weeks, but man, would it be a great three weeks.
Hugh on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 4:15 pm
The Ferdi is so amazing. I got one, ate it, and the next day, tried to sneak another up to the hotel room while the missus slept. The smell woke her up…
MRS. HUGH: “Can I have a bite?”
HUGH: “GrrrrrRRRRRRRrrrrrrr…” (Growls like a starving dog. Not kidding, either.)
I liked that they put Chik-Fil-A on there. Chik-Fil-A is awesome drunk food.
Taylor Ham takes me back to 7th grade. Not in a particularly good way, sorry to say. Was there a meatball sub on there? That’s how you Jersey oughta represent, IMHO….
Greater Czarina on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 5:52 pm
Mmmmm, hungry now.
FG, there’s a Chick-fil-a at Menlo Park Mall, should you want to begin your official sammitch tour,
Can’t believe they missed Kelly’s lobster rolls from Massachusetts. They put the whole friggin’ lobbie between two buns and they are the greatest in the world!
freakgirl on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 6:34 pm
GC, thanks for the tip!
Lee on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 7:52 pm
I was just kidding about the snub because there is nothing from Texas which is, as we all know, the barbecue capital of the world and center of all that is good and scrumptious. (heh)
freakgirl on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 8:08 pm
So, Lee, what’s your pick for best sandwich in Texas?
Lee on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 11:38 pm
oh lawd, the pressure! If I had to pick barbecue, it’s Kreuz’s in Lockhart, TX but you have to make your own sandwich–they just give you the meat and you ask for bread–no sauce. (none needed) I’m actually salivating a little just thinking about it.
Michael on Thursday, February 14, 2008 at 7:10 am
Locally, I had a fantastic sandwich for lunch the other week at Coco’s in Dayton. Who knew grilled cheese could be so good? With tomato soup…. OMG:
Italian Grilled Cheese
Fontina, Provolone, Romano and Asiago cheeses on sourdough bread dipped in an Italian bread crumb and Parmesan blend, grilled golden brown.
Cristiane on Thursday, February 14, 2008 at 8:05 pm
I was thrilled to see Allen & Sons barbeque from Chapel Hill - I’ve never actually had the sandwich version, but the barbeque plate is…is…is…just INCREDIBLE! NC barbeque ( at least that in the Piedmont area) is pulled pork - the whole pig is pit roasted for hours and basted with a sauce of vinegar and red pepper, and they serve it with hush puppies and coleslaw. I’m absolutely salivating just thinking about it. Hmmm. Maybe time for another trip home to see the parents?
