During the Secret Wars, when Spiderman was fighting in another dimension, his suit was ruined, and he came upon a black substance that bonded to him and became a new suit. So, he thought this new suit was great; it shifted with his thoughts, could be come other cloths, hold crap for him, etc. But eventually he figured out it was a sentient alien symbiote that fed on adrenaline, so Spider-Man was a great host for it. He also found out that the suit was making him do things while he was asleep, so he rejected the suit, and ditched it
Meanwhile, Peter Parker was in a bit of a rivalry with another photographer, Eddie Brock (played by Topher Grace in the movie). Eddie was a photographer at another paper, and thought he had cracked a serial killer case in NY. He was hailed as a hero. Then Spier-Man found the REAL perp, and Eddie Brock was fired and became a laughing stock. (Nothing malicious on Brock’s part, he was just wrong.) He went crazy, and was going to kill himself, but he came across the symbiote and they bonded over their hatred of Spider-Man, and fused together to take him down. Eddie and the symbiot combined to become Venom. Not a super-villain, per se, because his only goal is taking down Spider-Man.
This origin story has since been reconned slightly to say Brock has cancer, and this cancer heightens his production of adrenaline, and that’s why the symbiote chose to bond with him.
They may not go the alien direction with the suit, though. They may do something like the Venom storyline in Ultimate Spider-Man. From wikipedia:
“There is a genetically engineered protoplasmic “Venom Suit” that was designed by Richard Parker and Edward Brock Senior. Richard intended it to be used for medical purposes in his quest to cure cancer, but Eddie Brock Sr. was more interested in the military applications of the Suit.
Eddie continued his father’s research, using two samples from a Suit he found in his father’s fridge that was originally created for Richard Parker’s DNA. One of the samples bonded with Peter, who wanted to take the Suit for himself, leading to a variant of the “alien spider costume” storyline from the original Marvel Universe.”
JJJ, you’re almost right, but I think there’s one Secret Wars detail you’re a bit off on. When Spidey first got the suit, it was from something like the replicators on Star Trek. He needed a costume, he went up to one of the alien machines, and it gave him exactly that …
But at first, it was JUST a costume. It wasn’t until later that he realized the new costume was more than normal material, that it was amorphous, that it could be turned on and off, that it could create and shoot webbing, etc. And even longer after that before he figured out that it was sentient and was controlling him while he slept. And then all the Venom stuff happened.
I think Marvel at first just wanted to give him an extreme makeover, but it didn’t go over well with the public, so they gradually found a way to spin it into a supervillain and give him his old costume back again.
Okay, so apparently I was off on the details. Jeremy just helped me find online the actual page where Spidey first gets the costume. And while he does get it from an alien replicator, it’s in the form of a black ball, which when he touches it covers his body as a costume.

Holy crap. That looks…ummmm…like Chuck said.
So, I’m not a comics guy. Is there a basis in the lore for this Dark Spiderman?
