Slowing Down

Looks like we’ve hit the dog days of summer here at freakgirl dot com. I’m not finding many interesting things to post about, people are on vacation, energy levels are low. I figure things will pick up eventually. I’ve been spending most of my time writing my articles for HSW and trying to find other supplemental gigs. The geekboy and I are going to Florida in a few weeks to visit our families and hang with the kids. See? Nothing really interesting to report. Oh, last night I made fried okra for the first time, and spent the rest of the evening kicking myself for waiting so long to try it. Snacky crispy deliciousness!

My baby has a cold and a nasty cough (she should really stop smoking, but she’s hooked), I’ve had a HORRIBLE tooth ache and last night cried so hard b/c of the pain and almost od’d on Vicoden yesterday at work (one pill is good. two pills are BAD) and I’m just back from the dentist now, and it was a funky cavity, but I’m numb and it still hurts and I just hope I didn’t chew up the inside of my mouth trying to eat.

Oooh, Rona! Ouch!
Today I’m going to work on my sister’s shower invitations. I have the paper and punches, I just need to cut them up and put them together. They’re going to be so cute!

Rona, I hope you and the little one feel better soon. Yikes!
Maggie, I can’t wait to see the invites.

I’ve only had okra once in my life and it nearly made me puke with its sludginess, like a big ball of snot. This was in home ec. class in grade 7 (we had to make a veggie stew) and I think it was an over-cooking issue. That being said I couldn’t bear to try another one ever again, even with the promise of deep fried crispiness.
I want to snuggle that hound!

Everything I read about okra said that it’s slimy and snotty. I think that’s why it’s good in gumbo, because it thickens the broth or something? Gross.
Anyway, fried = no sludge. I swear. Alton Brown says so, too:

I also mixed in some banana peppers. Mmmmm.

OK, let me just focus on the okra for a minute. As a southerner, fried okra is a staple of almost every meal. Some people to eat boiled okra but only as some sort of punishment. It’s terrible disgusting that way. Fried, though? OMG SO GOOD. LOVE. I have it about once a week.
Oh, and yes it is totally the dog days of summer. Cranky, tired, disinterested…all of it.

Mmmmm. Fried okra. Makes me want to head down to Son’s Place and grab some with a couple of pieces of fried chicken, a side of collard greens, some cornbread and sweet tea. Perhaps even some banana pudding for dessert.

OK maybe I’ll try it. MAYBE.

Sandra, it’s delicious. It recalls the fried pumpkin blossoms of my misspent youth.

There’s room for all at Casa Sennebryant. The beers on ice.

A few years ago, a student of mine from Louisinana said that the important thing about cooking okra is to add an acid. I don’t know how much lemon juice, but that acid will cut the sliminess and make it good. he agreed - okra is good, but boiled is vile.

Just about anything fried is good. Yummy on the fried Okra and Zucchini.
Chocolate Zucchini bread is sooo good.
