Question About My Lawn

Friday, September 29, 2006 at 02:05pm

The lawn guys are currently in the back yard, driving through the wet grass dragging something that looks like a long, wide wheel covered in huge spikes. It’s leaving holes in the ground and pulling out spikes of dirt that look like piles of poop lying around. What are they doing? I’m so curious. But not curious enough to go out and ask them.

They are aerating the grass, not sure on the technicalities but they do it on golf courses all the time.

I live NEXT to the golf course, not ON it. I don’t want poop-shaped dirt all over my yard! They didn’t do this at the old place!

Oh well. If it means we’ll have a nicer lawn next year, then that’s cool, I guess. #

If your lawn soil is compacted, your lawn might not be getting the air it needs to thrive. Lawn aeration attends to this problem, pulling up plugs of soil and allowing water and nutrients to reach the roots of your grass.

Lawn aeration strengthens the roots, and strong roots equal a lush, green lawn. Aerating once or twice a year will generally do. With a lawn aerator, lawn aeration can be an easy do-it-yourself project, but any good lawn care provider can aerate for you as well.

    . . .

Tip #4: When you’re done, remove the plugs. Chances are you’ve walked by a recently aerated lawn and wondered who let the dogs out. Spare yourself any sidelong glances from the neighbors. Simply gather up the plugs or mow over them with your lawn mower to break them up.

So, our new lawn guys are better than our old lawn guys. My dad said that our old lawn guys cut our grass too short.

Is this what my life has become? Talking about my lawn on my blog? Pretty soon I’m going to be out there throwing beer cans at that weird kid who spends all afternoon riding his bike in circles.

We did that for our old lawn, and followed the plug pulling with seeding, and has a really nice carpet of grass come in last Spring. It almost looked like hairplugs when it started coming in!

But all the kids in the neighborhood thought there were turds all over our lawn. Heh.

Curiously, this post could have been headed Shameless Plug Alert as well.

This same kid also stands on the strip of grass between our parking lots and hits golf balls. He comes perilously close to our cars.

Rona, your comment got held in moderation because my program thought it was spam. I bet it was the word “hairplugs” that did it.

    Spam? Moi?
I was using my blackberry, and going blind trying to read the super-small font, so I wonder if that had anything to do with it. Maybe it saw it as an email.
It also asked me to type in a 4digit code, which I thought was new on your end, but must’ve been the blackberry’s issue. It’s so hard to navigate, b/c the screen is so small.
