O’Reilly Bothered That Dumbledore Outing Teaches Tolerance

Bill O’Reilly is troubled that the outing of Dumbledore will teach kids to be tolerant of homosexuals. Let me repeat that.

Bill O’Reilly [a man who has bizarre sexual fantasies and loofah fetishes] is troubled that the outing of Dumbledore [a FICTIONAL character] will teach kids to be tolerant [children are apparently homophobic from birth and need to be taught tolerance] of homosexuals [who, contrary to popular belief, are just like you and me].

I predict a Larry-Craig-style gay sex scandal for O’Reilly within a year.

  1. It kills me. He is disturbed because this might, his god forbid (and any god so petty and mean-spirited should really have his god club card revoked), encourage TOLERANCE of fellow human beings.

I know you linked to it, but I can’t help highlighting the response by Mark Harris in Entertainment Weekly because it’s just so BASIC and TRUE that it screams for repeating:

“In addition to the braying of hatemongers, there’s already been some umbrage taken at the appropriateness of Rowling’s decision to uncork this news in front of children, a brand of sanctimony for which I have no patience. At least one out of 25 of those children will eventually self-identify as homosexual. The other 24, having made their way through an epic series that includes multiple murders, demonic possession, and the psychic toll of having mentally ill parents, will, I imagine, be able to handle the bulletin that some people are gay, and will likely benefit from the richer understanding of the world that such knowledge provides.”

This just underscores Rowling’s brilliance to me. Make the world love and admire this character. Make the world mourn him when he dies. Then tell the world he’s gay, and watch every bigoted asshole try to explain what changed. Watch every intolerant parent lose face in front of children who are probably more tolerant than they are, as they try to explain why it’s not okay to like Dumbledore any more.

It’s a gift that just keeps giving.

Snerk. I like how the guy has to make sure we all understand he doesn’t want to have sex with Dumbledore.

Bill O’Reilly incites such hate from me. I read the link and for like 10 seconds I’m so mad I literally can’t even think straight. I hate that people like him exist.

Oh, and Geekboy? I totally agree. Love it.

Let me preface this by saying I hate Bill O’Reilly and that I’m about 3 years behind on anything H.P. related.

That said, did she out her character in the book/movie or just in some public speech? I read the first three books and have seen every movie, except the last one, and never once was even provoked to ponder Dumbledore’s gender preference.

Maybe when I catch-up all will be revealed (hope so) otherwise I have to question why this was ever brought up.

That’s part of the brilliance, yeti. There are no hints (as I understand) and it’s never an issue, because, well, the headmaster’s sexuality really shouldn’t be an issue in a school, regardless. So now the zealots will find meaningful passages that weren’t there and blow their own stupidity in their own faces (or faeces) again.

  7. I don’t read the books, so I can’t really make an educated comment, but I’ll tell you that when we told Lisa about Rowling’s revelation, she said, “Oh, because he was in love with Grindelwald. Of course!” So for some people, maybe not so much of a surprise?

Yeti, it was brought up because someone asked Rowling if Dumbledore would ever find true love, and she said that, actually, he was gay, and his true love was the great tragedy of his life.

  8. We are watching 90210 reruns and Kelly just had dinner with her lesbian burn victim friend that is in love with her. I didn’t know if I should laugh or cry, so we laughed at just HOW STUPID it all is. David and Claire, who KNOW KELLY VERY WELL, walk in on them having dinner and they ASSUME that Kelly is now GAY. She just WENT GAY. Because there is a gay woman in the living room with her.

And then Brandon finds out that KELLY IS NOW SUPERDUPERGAYTASTIC with Alison, so the episode ends with him deciding to drink himself to death in a pool in Palm Springs.

The power of gay, you guys.

  9. That episode of 90210, particularly the Brandon/frat boy stuff, was some of the most homophobic shit I’ve ever seen. It shocked me back then; now I think it’s hilarious.

Dumbledore lived alone, was kind of fastidious, preached tolerance, and despite being at least 80 — if not more — there was never any mention of him ever having been in a romantic relationship with a woman. And in seven books, we never even saw him so much as flirt with a woman.

In other words, he was the classic “Guy Who Never Has A Girlfriend Yet Nobody Assumes He Might Be Gay — He’s Just Waiting For The Right Girl To Come Along”. It’s a peculiar kind of social blindness.

Rowling was probably beginning to wonder how many more clues we all needed. #

  12. Tonight we get to watch the episode with Monica Schnarre where Steve gets a surprise and almost some buttsecks.

  13. I can’t believe you know that woman’s name.

So have we sussed the sexual proclivities of all the other staff while we’re at it, or have these been described in the books by the method known as “character development”?

  15. GeekBoy said

Well … I’ve always been a little worried about the fact that Rupert spends so much time with all those freaky animals. #

As for the method that the bunnies call “character development” … speaking as a recovering English & Creative Writing major, it’s my opinion that in any good writing, said development can often happen between the lines. Otherwise, it would be almost impossible to write a decent short story without getting bogged down in exposition.

GB I’m from that same school and I find this a little blatent and indulgent on behalf on the writer’s “outing”.

I too love the brilliance of the “gift that keeps on giving” that you ref. earlier (just what this society needs!) but from a subtext standpoint, there ends that literary discussion.

  17. Are you kidding? Monica Schnarre was one of Canada’s famous models, before Tricia Helfer. She was a big deal. She’s from near where my parents’ live. Personally, I find her unattractive. But there you go.

Is the Analysis even worth it?…

Freakgirl tries to analyze Bill O’Reilly’s righteous indignation on the ‘outing’ of Dumbledore. I thought she nailed the absurdity. Bill O’Reilly [a man who has bizarre sexual fantasies and loofah fetishes] is troubled that the outing of Dumbledo…
