Oooh, I Got an iPhone!

Yep, I did it. Couldn’t resist the cheap price of a refurbish, and we got me an 8GB iPhone over the weekend. Loving it so far. I do have a few complaints — no MMS support? Makes me sad, as my sister and friends message me a lot of pics of their kids. I know there’s an email workaround, but it’s a little bit of  PITA. Also, as I suspected, the 3G network in our neighborhood is pretty much non-existent. I have to turn it off and use the EDGE network instead if I don’t have access to WiFi (like when we’re out on a walk or something). And the phone appears to be interfering with my mouse at times here at my desk, which is odd.

So, my iPhone friends, tell me your favorite apps! I’ve downloaded a few so far (Urban Spoon, TwitterFon, Facebook, WeatherBug, Flixster, Yelp, Pandora). I’m looking for a good Flickr uploader (using FlickIt right now, but don’t like that I can’t rotate the photo) and a good photo retouching program. And whatever else might be super-fun. Also, FREE. I’ll pay for an app if it’s really good, though.

  1. Around Me? That’s a fun one for finding coffee, gas, restaurants, movies, whatever, around wherever you are. Also that Shazam for finding music is really cool.

  2. MMS support is coming when they release the 3.0 version of the software (firmware?) later in the spring/early summer. It should be free, too. Also, it should have true GPS, and cut and paste :)

  3. That’s awesome. Especially the cut-and-paste.

  4. I heard about one where you could hit a button when you’ve parked in a YOOGE parking lot and it would help you find your car again when you came out. I wish I knew the name.

  5. I saw that one in the store; it’s called Find My Car or something. I SOOOOOO need that.

  6. My friend has this cowbell one, that makes the sound when you shake the phone. You need more cowbell!

  7. There is also a one like Shazaam, only you just hum a tune and it tries to detect the song. It’s for those times when you have a song stuck in your head, but don’t know the words, and need to figure it out.

  8. I installed one that just keeps repeating “That’s what she said,” every time you press the button.

I think my friend Ferd has the one where you can hum a tune to detect a song. Crazy.

  9. Yes, Shazam.
I also have a drumkit and a piece of wood for the ‘knock on wood’ -situations.
I have a bunch of radiotuners for internet radio, because Dutch radio stations are pretty much the same. But IIRC you have Sirius, so you don’t need that?

  10. Yeah, I have Sirius, but I probably won’t use it much on the iPhone.

  11. I am an app whore. There’s an air hockey game that I’m addicted to and I also love Tap Tap Revenge and Word Warp and well, a bunch of other games. I use the Weather Channel app frequently as well as WikiTap, google and Shazam. I heart Shazam. I use the google calendar so I paid for the SaiSuke google calendar sync app, although there may be other options for that now. PhoneFlix is good if you do Netflix. I like the public radio app that lets you stream public/college radio stations from all over the country. And when I have trouble getting to sleep, I use an app called aSleep, which has different sounds you can set to a timer or sometimes a hypnosis app. I also have “That’s what she said” and the iPity app that just gives Mr. T quotes. I also got a great deal of amusement from the Atomic Fart machine app, but I have the mentality of an 8th grade boy sometimes.

  12. Darkroom- it is a steady camera for shooting nice photos.
Roll Swap- So you can organize your photos into groups.
Movies- quick access to local theaters. You can even buy your tickets online.
White Pages- Amazing- access the US Phone book- reverse look up, fast- nice.
    City Search-
Connect- Gives you the fast track to getting a human on the phone at every company.
TruPhone- Like skype but on the phone. Really great for staying in touch with friends.
    Facebook-
    AIM-
Dialer- Voice Dialer for when you are lazy.
    Wikiamo- Wikipedia on the Iphone
I talk- voice recorder (But the new iphone firmware will have one as well)
    Iconic notes- an organizer thingy.
    TMZ- Full TMZ stories
    NYTimes- The newspaper.
Gigotron- Live concerts for LA, San Fran and NYC
Flight Tracker- I paid for this one but I fly a lot. It gives some live data about flights.
Remote- Control your itunes from you phone using your home wifi
I.TV- tv guide on the phone.
eBay- track, search and bid on ebay crap.
SnapTell- take a picture of a cd, book or dvd- it tells you where to get it and how much it should cost.
Urban Spoon- The food slot machine that they used to advertise the phone with.
How Cast- fun videos about how to do things
Public Radio, Iheartradio, wmmr rocks, hot107, aol radio, pandora, indi 103, college radio, wxpn 885, – tons of radio on the iphone.

The games burn the battery, surfing the web does as well but not nearly as quickly as the videos and games. If you are going to do a lot of that stuff – I know you will. Keep your charger handy.

The headphones break. so if you are not going to use them for the phone you might just take your regular ones around. I hope you love it. Like I said before. I hate how much I love my iPhone.

  13. I love that you have TMZ on your app list. You’re so Hollywood. ;)

    Going to d/l Darkroom now.

Also, I read that they’re releasing Skype for iPhone.

  14. I love my iPhone far more than I should.

The best thing about it? It’s actually a really good phone. I can hear people and they can hear me and everything.

  15. I’ve barely gotten a chance to talk on it yet!

  16. Deb, Don’t tell me you wont be downloading TMZ too. A few days after I got my iPhone I was able to watch that guy throw shoes at Bush. After that I was sold.

  17. also: the facebook app is better than the regular website (especially since the big change); more cowbell; ny times (easy to read); pour1out (stupid iPhone trickery but has a function that automatically finds the nearest liquor stores); last.fm; google earth

    have fun!

  18. I don’t have an iPhone (i love my BB, though) but my friends do and one has an application that turns his iphone into a lightsabre, which is always a big hit with the geeks.

  19. A lightsaber? ooooh.

  20. Okay, I am now in my living room swinging my phone around like an idiot.

  21. I use the lightsaber on my Touch all the time. When I showed it to my seven year old nephew at Christmas, he lost his shit. And then I did, because he insisted on using it and I was sure he’d throw it into a wall/window/tv.

  22. And I know you’re not using a Kindle, but that’s my favorite app currently. For whatever reason, it continues to amaze me that it always knows what page I’m on between the Touch and the Kindle. Even though I don’t read on the Touch too much. I just flick it on to see if I can CATCH IT UNAWARE ON THE WRONG PAGE.

  23. Like the Kindle is reading its own books when you’re not looking? Scary. :)

I downloaded the iPhone Kindle App and grabbed a free copy of the Cook’s Illustrated book.

  24. Photonasis is a good free Photo Re-touching program, its pretty cool, i like it.
