I remember when I was unemployed, the empoyer who finally hired me, had her doubts, because I was unemployed for a couple of months and she thought I might have some difficulties getting into the work rhythm again. She told me this afterwards. So apparently there are prejudices against unemployed people that seem hard to shake. Even in this crappy economy.
I’ve been running into the same issue because I’ve been freelancing for seven years. They ask if I’m going to have trouble “adjusting.” But I worked onsite in an office from November to May, so I am “adjusted.” Ugh.
At my last interview I told them “The great thing about me is that I’m NEVER gonna ask for a day off, because I’ve totally had my fill of NOT working.”
We’ll see if that pushes them towards hiring me. I still haven’t heard anything yet…
That’s a good way of looking at it! At my last one, I told them that because I’ve freelanced for so long, I am an extraordinary self-starter and that they’ll never catch me shirking work — because as a freelancer, if you don’t work, you don’t eat. They liked that. And it’s true.
