There were huge booths on the floor for the Independent Film Channel, and "Grindhouse," and Lego, and "Hot Fuzz" amongst others. Granted, these things share a fan base, but they don't really have anything to do with comics....of course turning it into two cons is never going to happen, but one can dream... Any way, I hope you guys have fun! I stumbled into a press conference featuring Jenna Jameson hawking her comic book project, which almost made the insanity worth it, just being able to see how completely scary she looks up close. But the best was the "Women of Battlestar" press panel. THAT was awesome. This is the third year. The first year was a nightmare, because they underestimated attendance, botched the ticket sales, and didn't book nearly enough space at the Javitz. Last year was much improved -- more space on the floor, you could actually get to the panels, and with a press pass, everything went smoothly. But something has noticeably changed in the comics industry over the past year, particularly with the conventions. With increasing sales of graphic novels, comics have gone mainstream in a big way, and the cons themselves now attract all kinds of non-comics fans who are there more for the movie stuff or for potential celebrity sightings than for comics. Which is fair enough -- but as we've seen in San Diego, it completely turns these things into circuses. That's why we're going on Friday and Saturday this year, instead of Saturday and Sunday -- hoping that Friday should be a bit more calm. You know, unless the pope shows up looking to get his "Heroes" graphic novel signed by Tim Kring. Then all bets are off. I’m worried about the NY Con this year actually. This is the third year. I hope the New York version is a little more manageable. Even with the press pass in San Diego you'd have to wait in line for hours and hours to get into the big Hollywod presentations.
