New Music
I decided to kick off the day by purchasing some new music. First up, The Shins – Wincing the Night Away. Also, I downloaded two singles by new pop sensation Mika. He reminds me of Jake Shears (which is a good thing). Anyone have any other recommendations today?

I bought The Shins at Target on Friday and have been listening to it ever since. Really enjoyed it in the shower this morning. Vous?
Oh, and God help me, the Dreamgirls soundtrack, too.

Maria and I went to see OAR on Saturday, and they had Gomez as one of their opening acts, and they were really good.

I LOVE Gomez. I’ve been listening to them for years. I guess OAR is a bigger band than I thought they were, because I would have guessed Gomez would be the headliner.

I bought The Shins at Target too. But I didn’t pick up Dreamgirls. Is it good?

I love the new Shins – it’s way more akin to their first record than their sophomore, though they’re all great.
I have 2 really strong recommends right now.
#1 – The Format – Dog Problems
This a my favorite record right now, I’ve listened to it non-stop for a month and can’t recommend it enough. It’s a power pop opera, wall of sound and harmonies, piano, guitars, horns, and one great lead singer with his tongue firmly planted in cheek.
#2 – Menomena – Friend and Foe. They call it “art rock”, but don’t let that scare you. This is their most accessible record yet, almost poppy even, with just enough “strange” thrown in for good measure.

Lisa, by all means consider the source, but yes, I think Dreamgirls is really good. I’ll let you know how long until I stop crying during “I Am Changing”. In hindsight, I’d single track it though, and just grab that along with “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” and “Listen”.
Power pop opera, Chuck? I think The Format is in my future.

I’m also listening to (and loving) Eliot Morris’ What’s Mine Is Yours, but I fear it might be too plainwrap sensitive singer-songwriter for all you cultural elite bitches. Check out “Balancing The World” for a taste of his stuff.
January 30th, 2007 - 10:23
The new Shins is great. I’m currently pretty big on Devendra Banhart and Iron and Wine. Can’t go wrong with anything by either one.
January 30th, 2007 - 10:27
The Ark!
Thanks to The Other Andrew and the soundtrack of Shortbus, I’ve been listening their “This Piece of Poetry Is Meant To Do No Harm” over and over.
January 30th, 2007 - 10:27
Oh and by the way, from now on whenever I describe an album to somebody, I’m going to open with “It’s a power pop opera…” For example – “The new John Mayer, It’s a power pop opera…” or “You know the new Jason Mraz, it’s quite the power pop opera…”
January 30th, 2007 - 10:29
I can’t possibly see how John Mayer can be power pop opera and Claptonesque all at once.
January 30th, 2007 - 10:33
My thoughts exactly.
January 30th, 2007 - 10:33
But if anyone can pull it off, it’s John.

Somewhat on topic, have you found iConcertCal yet? Basically, it’s a feature you can download in about 30 seconds to add onto iTunes which tells you when artists in your iTunes library are coming to town. I already found one concert I have to go to that I would not have found otherwise. You can get it at http://www.iconcertcal.com/installation.php
Here’s hoping that it soon leads me attending a Claptonesque Power Pop Opera by the one and only JM.

Ken, that is so cool! Thanks.
January 30th, 2007 - 14:51
What about Paolo (is he a recording artist or a delicious sandwich spread) Nutini? Such a buzz….any good?
January 30th, 2007 - 15:17
Never heard of him. You can watch his videos here, though:

I watched a little and then got bored. But that might be because I’ve been listening to Jeff Buckley this afternoon and nothing can really compare to “Last Goodbye.”
January 30th, 2007 - 16:03
Nothing.
May I belabor the point? “Last Goodbye” is the popular song equivalent of Michelangelo’s David, where you can feel you’re in the presence/experience of greatness/transcendence.
January 30th, 2007 - 16:20
Every time I hear that song, my heart hurts.
January 30th, 2007 - 17:18
I can only commit to one song at a time, until I smother it and it starts getting ansty, then becomes distant and starts seeing other people. “This Piece Of Poetry Is Meant To Do Harm” by The Ark is starting to think about an exit strategy, but I’m still in denial and convinced we’ll be together forever.
January 30th, 2007 - 17:34
“This Piece Of Poetry Is Meant To Do Harm” is actually considering using “it’s not you, it’s me”.
January 30th, 2007 - 17:35
I know. But maybe we can work it out, you know? Everyone has their differences right?
January 30th, 2007 - 18:20
These things take work. I’m sure you guys will be fine.
January 30th, 2007 - 22:31
I would have suggested both Mika and The Shins- cool! Also, have you heard Robbie’s “Rudebox”? It’s pretty fun. Just heard the new Clap Your Hands and Arcade Fire. Still in listening in mode with both, so stay tuned.
January 31st, 2007 - 06:21
PS Doesn’t “Split Needles” (from The Shins) start off like it’s a song from The Police?
January 31st, 2007 - 06:26
Something that freaks me out about downloadable music (or is it just about iTunes?) is that I’ll go to check out The Format (at Chuck’s urging) and find, somewhat unbeknownst to me, that I have five songs on my hard drive from them. And I’ve even listened to them. It says so right in the Last Played column. Do you do this or have I started the slow, imperceptible slide into dementia?
January 31st, 2007 - 06:28
……sending out an S.O.S. ……..
January 31st, 2007 - 08:22
Split Needles does in fact recall Message in a Bottle.
Verified!
January 31st, 2007 - 08:49
Poor Michael!
Seriously, that has happened to me a few times as well.
January 31st, 2007 - 08:49
Betty Rocker – I really like “Rudebox.” It’s totally fun!
