New “How Stuff Works” Article

My latest article is up over at How Stuff Works — How Wetlands Work. In one article, I managed to mention the Jersey Devil, Swamp Thing, Phish and “the swamps of New Jersey” (holla, Springsteen!).

  1. Great article. I hope you collect these articles into a book someday. BTW I look at the term “development” as deceptively euphemistic for what it really is — habitat destruction.

  2. I don’t own these articles — Discovery Communications does, I believe.

I wonder if How Stuff Works has ever thought about putting out a book, though.

  3. There are a few books out.

On the flip side, I’m finishing an article on “Hawkeye the scuba diving cat.”

Oddly enough, it may be my most high profile piece yet. They’re rolling out a TV commerical on Disc Channel and a TIMES SQUARE BILLBOARD next week based on scuba kitteh and this article. Crazy world.

  4. Ah, I’d never heard of any of the books.

Congratulations on scuba kitteh. That’s totally bizarre.

  5. Not sure congratulations are in order, but thanks. More like – I got lucky they decided to promote something so wacky for our first bit of advertising.

The commercial is pretty funny – look for it starting next week.

  6. BTW – I have a sidebar in the article called “Kitteh’s Got the Bends.”

I thought you might appreciate that as a fan of both Radiohead and cats!

  7. Dude, in the article I just turned in, I called my sidebar “fake plastic trees.”

We are as of one brain!

    TOO FUNNY!

Sidebars and picture captions are a good place to get really creative – you can get away with it. I try and work in as many song titles and pop culture references in as I can. You’re lucky on one hand to not have to do pics, but it is kind of fun.
