Well, all things considered, I’d rather it was a stink bug than some other kinds of bugs. From what I understand, stink bugs are only dangerous to plants, right? And so far, the only two we’ve ever found were in a room that doesn’t actually have any plants in it. But that room does have windows overlooking the woods behind our house. So my guess is that they’re just wandering in with the change of weather.
If it makes you guys feel any better, I’ve had two roach sitings in my [nice!] DC apartment in the last two weeks. Somehow I could deal with Ella dragging out a dead mouse (barf) and a dead woman (suicide by way of jumping off the balcony). Which makes it somewhat funny that is the roaches I simply cannot handle.
Thankfully it’s a short-term lease and I’ll be outta here by June.
yeah FG, looks like a stink bug to me. just remember this - if GB pisses you off, step on it and send the dead body his way (via kicking of course) and then leave the room. i’ve done this to my boyfriend ttwice (he was irritating me) and it makes him *so* mad after sitting on the couch for about 15 minutes sniffing…hehehe i think he’s on to that trick now though, so i’m looking for something new!
Rain, just so you know, that bug is bigger on the screen than it was in real life. It was only about the size of a fingernail, if that. Not sure if that assuages your fear at all.
GB - wait til she steps on it and kicks it at you!! the smell is definitely larger than life.
FG - my boyfriend kindly relocates bugs. i kill them. mainly b/c i had an assassin bug in my house that i captured under a glass to see if i could figure out what it was (this was back in my bug relocation days!). my cat knocked over the glass and it bit her - it was AWFUL for her!
like the old saying goes - one bad apple ruins the bunch. and now all bugs must die!
OHMYGOD we have the same ones and they freak me the fuck out. I explained them to our exterminator, and he said they wake up in the warmer weather and get confused and come inside instead of outside (apparently they slumber in the walls during the winter). He said they’re harmless, like lady bugs, and he wouldn’t bother spraying for them - I guess it wouldn’t do anything except maybe give us cancer. I kill the fuckers, and get grossed out when their shell cracks, but i just HATE them so much.
They never stunk, though.
My logical brain understands they are harmless, but my fragile girlie brain can’t stand the sight of them. I have such a fear of bugs molesting me while I sleep.
Last week while we were biking, Beth told me I had a huge bug on my shirt and I nearly rode into the Delaware River trying to flick it off me without actually having to look at it.
Rona, just to pay you back for telling Freakgirl that there are bugs living in our walls, I’m sorry to inform you that there’s been a recent spate of monkey sightings in New Jersey this spring. I hear they like to hide in closets and under beds … some have even been known to establish entire colonies in attics and basements. So beware.
Dude, y’all got nothin on us! I was sitting on the throne in the bathroom the other week during a cold spell counting about 10 stink bugs, 20 box elder bugs, 12 ladybugs, a couple of black flies, a huge spider (and a partridge in a pear tree). They were on the hanging plant, window, light fixtures, vanity, toilet paper roll & shower curtain. Lucy came in to purr around my feet with a tick on the back of her head….I just about lost my mind. I vacuumed up every bug I could find in the house that day…hundreds. When you vacuum a stink bug, they smell like cilantro…very refreshing! Little bastardos like to fall into my wine glass as I’m drinking, too. Sometimes bugs must die.
And yes, getting bit by an assassin bug is supposed to be super painful, but they are very beneficial bugs. They kill Japanese beetles and don’t normally bother humans.

It’s a stink bug. So no, that hasn’t been the GB you’ve been smelling.
Grey Rainbow on Thursday, May 01, 2008 at 9:03 am
yeah, what is that? we always have them in our house and we are in PA if you need geographical background!!!!
freakgirl on Thursday, May 01, 2008 at 9:07 am
DO NOT WANT!!! DO NOT WANT!!!

Still do not want.
Although it might explain last night’s mystery fart. (we blamed Meena)
GeekBoy on Thursday, May 01, 2008 at 9:37 am
Heh. I think the bug was gone by then.
freakgirl on Thursday, May 01, 2008 at 9:39 am
Well, in my mind right now, our room is teeming with them.
chuck on Thursday, May 01, 2008 at 9:51 am
They only emit the stink when threatened. And you could always return fire!

I believe it’s the Namibian Carnivorous Spitting Beetle. A swarm can skeletonize a cow in under 40 seconds. And then spit.

OMG there was a suicide in your building? Horrible.
I can’t cope with roaches, either.
Soosan on Thursday, May 01, 2008 at 11:53 am
don’t get me started on house centipedes (Scutigera).
I actually get nightmares about them. Serious heebie jeebies.
GeekBoy on Thursday, May 01, 2008 at 11:55 am
Megan, are you sure you don’t have the fun kind of roaches?

OMG. So mean! Heh.
Honestly, in this house, we don’t kill bugs. The geekboy relocates them.
Except for the really scary ones. Those get murdered in cold blood. Hey, it’s either us or them.
Rain on Thursday, May 01, 2008 at 2:06 pm
I name that bug “AAAAAAAGGGGGHHHHH!”
Seriously, if that thing was crawling around my bedroom, I’d just have to up and move.

IN THE WALLS? IN THE WALLS?
Yay, I’ll never sleep again.

I am so happy I no longer live in an area ridden with ticks. TICKS. Bugs are one thing… but bugs bore into you? hell to the no.
