My Gay Messiah
Monday, January 14, 2008 at 10:09amThe Rufus Wainwright show was wonderful. His sister Lucy opened, and she was lovely and adorable. You can hear some of her music here. We greatly enjoyed her set and I hope her career continues to grow. Rufus stepped out onstage in a black-and-white print suit, and launched into what apparently was a new set. Which was obvious when he forgot the lyrics a few times. Which was very cute.
Rufus has some very devoted fans, people who obviously follow him around. There was one guy in the front row who leapt up after every song and applauded madly. Rufus seemed flattered, but after a while I would have been a bit like, “Dude, enough.” During the encore, this one woman moaned loudly during his performance, which was kind of funny but also kind of WTF after it happened several more times. Anyway, Susie got us great seats, and I deeply regret not bringing my camera. It’s just such a crapshoot - sometimes you can bring them in, sometimes you can’t - and I don’t want to have to go and leave my precious Rebel in the car. If I had brought it, though, oh the photos I would have. Ah well. A lovely night altogether.

What a fun night. I sure love me some Rufus. And it would be hard to find better companions for the evening that Lisa & FG. As usual, FG was the perfect host — bed turned down at night, coffee ready and waiting in the morning, and even a travel mug to take with me on the ride home.

Except I made you share a bathroom with the kittens.

I knew you’d have a great time. I saw him outdoors and from the lawn (not the close-in seating), so I missed out on some of the more emotive fans. He draws a great crowd, though, doesn’t he?
So, a new set. Did he do songs you didn’t know?

Heh. I would have put sharing a bathroom with the kittens on the “Reasons to Stay at Freakgirl’s” list.

When I saw him the set leaned more toward the stuff from the latest CD, although he did do “The Art Teacher” (!) and “Gay Messiah” (!) and “Beautiful Child” (!). And then the Garland encore.
Seriously, it was tailor made for me.
I didn’t know he had a sister Lucy.

She’s his half-sister…her mom is one of the Roches. She has a lovely singing voice and she’s adorable onstage.
