Michael Stipe Speaks Out

Friday, March 21, 2008 at 02:21pm

The other day, a bunch of gossip rags reported that Michael Stipe had “come out.” I don’t know what rocks these people have been living under, as he’s been out for years. Anyway, this is pretty amusing.

That was awesome even if their music hasn’t been for almost 20 years now.

HAHA the new CD is pretty good in comparison to more recent efforts. And haven’t we all known he was gay like … forever?

Next you’ll be telling me that Andy Dick is gay. Pppffftttt!

    Boooo, Jon.

Automatic For The People was their finest album.

Didn’t that one have “The Sidewinder Sleeps?”- oh wait you are kidding- alright you got me! Seriously REMs music isn’t awful- they had their day and it was easily 20 years ago. They have a few decent songs in the post Berry days- but it really is just a few. Automatic was the beginning of the end- they spiked up on monster and took a giant dive after that.

Actually I wasn’t kidding! I love that album. Trust me, I’m all about the old stuff - I lived in Athens for 6 years, hell - Mike Mills was on my softball team. But they’re about much more than the early jangle days, imo. I think they evolved like any good band should and weren’t afraid to push their own envelope. Who wants to hear Chronic Town for 30 years? New Adventures in HiFi was awesome too. I even liked the experimental Up. Admittedly, their last couple were a bit of a letdown - but I absolutely think they’ve put out some awesome music since 1988.

I remember the MTV interview sometime in the 90s (that’s about as specific as I get these days) when Stipe said, regarding his sexuality, it just depended who was sitting on his lap at the time!

    There’s nothing ambiguous about that.
