My cat once got ahold of some ribbon (to this day, we still have no idea where, because we were vigilant about keeping it out of the house) and she was in the hospital for three days while they waited to see if she'd pass it or if they were going to do surgery. We knew because... it was sticking out of her butt. And the vet said, "Don't pull it! You could rip her intestine!" Ew. Re: dogs and retainers: not really. The wires are embedded in the plastic and don't have sharp edges, so they'd probably just bend the crap out of them. It's possible for the retainer to break into pieces, but unlikely. Othodontists usually pass out a little list that says, "Keep this away from your dog! Don't throw it away when you wrap it in a napkin at lunch! Don't leave it in the car, it will melt!" People don't often believe it, and I can even tell you how many times I remade retainers for kids who did one of the three things above! Oh, good, freakgirl! Are you still giving her Barley Cat? I bet if you gave her a tablespoon of either ground beef heart or liver 2 times a week she would quit trying to kill herself with thumb tacks. When I had kids and people asked us what we would do if the kids were allergic to cats, we both said that there were many families that would love to adopt a cute healthy baby!
