Lisa Needs Advice

Thursday, December 13, 2007 at 09:05am

A question from Lisa:

I think I’d like to get my nephew a magazine subscription for his birthday. He’s 14, plays the guitar and loves music (especially metal - gross). Any suggestions? Rolling Stone seems so blech, although to be honest, I haven’t bought a copy in years. I used to enjoy Spin. What about Blender?

Freaknation? Opinions?

Hmmm. I personally think Spin and Blender both suck. I have a 17 year old who plays bass and always enjoyes stealing my Rolling Stone. But, if the nephew is a music snob, he might not like the fact that Rolling Stone covers all genre of music. But, there are heavy metal magazine’s and guitar magazine’s out there. Off hand, I don’t know names. I just know I see them when I go to the bookstore.

I work in magazine publishing, but none of our magazines would remotely appeal to a teenage boy… When I was that age (in 1991!) I loved Alternative Press, but I don’t even know if they still exist, much less if they are relevant.

My metal-playing webmaster suggests Metal Maniacs, which is a teenbeat version of a hardcore mag like Terrorizer.

I have no idea what I just said.

Does anyone out there remember Creem magazine, or Circus? I used to love them when I was his age. Boy Howdy!

Wow, Metal Maniacs has the worst website ever. Here’s their page on Amazon:
    http://www.amazon.com/Metal-Maniacs/dp/B0007TUQ2Q

Note there are also suggestions for other mags.

    They still print AP http://altpress.com/index.cfm

I just called my brother who is 16. plays guitar and is in a metal band (puke)… I wanted to see what he suggested. He told me he’s in class and hung up on me… Sometimes I forget that I’m so much older then him and he’s in school…. I’m old.

He’s allowed to have a cellphone ring in class? WTF? Even my mom, who’s a teacher, isn’t allowed to have that.

Ha, Lisa, Circus was how I got all my Def Leppard picture needs met as a teen.

No he’s not supposed to have it, that’s why he hung up on me. He can bring it to school, but he’s supposed to leave it in his locker with the ringer off.

If he’s a metal-loving guitar player, and does not already subscribe to it, Guitar World is just the thing.

Whatever you do, go to Magazines.com. Save some bucks.

Playboy. Oh ok, ok so it’s not strictly about music, but HE’S FOURTEEN for cryin’ out loud. You just can’t go wrong (and the look on your sibling’s face would probably be worth framing as a bonus)…

    FERD! Shame on you!

Ah. Yes. You’re right, that was rude. I shouldn’t have assumed. PlayGIRL, then?

    CHEEKY MONKEY!

  19. Hugh on Thursday, December 13, 2007 at 4:41 pm

Cheeky Monkey is a magazine? I’d subscribe to that.

I agree with Paul - Guitar World is perfect. It has a good amount of metal (gotta say…I love metal!) with rock and even some occasional blues stuff, but it is just great for guitar players no matter what their skill level.
