Leggings Versus Tights

Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at 09:11am

Somebody please tell me - what is the difference between leggings and tights? Aside from the “tights have feet” thing, of course.

    The material.

    More specific?

Because you can buy heavy tights. I have some that are nearly sweater-grade.

Why can you NOT wear tights with a tunic-style blouse (or very short dress), but you CAN wear leggings?

Do they both have a crotch?

  4. freakgirl on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at 9:44 am

    Nice. YES.

Thigh-highs are a whole other discussion.

You should e-mail the fug girls. #

Yeah, I’m sure they’ll say NO LEGGINGS EVER.

    However, I disagree.

  7. Soosan on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at 10:05 am

    I used to be anti-leggings, until I got a pair… now I’m a convert.

(I also like the dress over jeans trend that they disagree with.)

I have no idea what the difference is between tights however. I’m inclined to say that leggings have less seaming around the butt area.

So, is it appropriate to wear leggings with a very short dress (or tunic-style shirt)? I have something that I thought was a dress but turns out is really short (a few inches above the knee). If I wear good leggings with that, can I feel “safe” in terms of bending over and stuff like that?

I feel so old. And short. And fat.

    Found this…

If anything, it probably further confuses the matter!! #

I say, do it… get on wit yo bad self. Throw on that short dress and rock those leggings!

Heh, that article says I’m too short and fat to wear leggings.

    I KNEW IT!

    This thread is so hot.

    SHUT UP.

I think leggings typically are a thicker cotton material. Even if you buy thick tights they’re usually still flimsy aren’t they? I don’t know I don’t wear either.

I personally think we need to go back to stirrups.

  15. freakgirl on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at 11:19 am

They still make them! Which means people are wearing them!

  16. Maggie on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at 11:41 am

Oh jebus cripes, stirrups! So we can make a straight line from our wide hips down to our tiny ankles and walking around looking like upside-down bowling pins. Good night!

Tights are like pantyhose. You can see the seams in the crotch and gusset and probably see your underwear through the panty-part. Leggings I consider to be pants.

I am a fan of leggings in the winter under dresses and stuff, particularly with boots. I love big boots.

I also like the tunic dress over jeans phenomenon. I think it’s cute.

Wear the leggings, and if you sit on the floor or fall down drunk, no one will see your bum.

    Yeah, IF.

    Heh.

  19. sandra on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at 12:07 pm

My mom would SO LOVE to bring back the stirrups. She wore her last pair until they disintegrated, years and years ago. Do they still have them around? Good lord, I can only hope no one tells her.

Gusset is such a dirty-sounding word. Your DIRTY GUSSET.

I bet American Apparel sells them, and I bet they sell them in gold. I like to go into that store just to see what the clerks are wearing.

Are you people kidding me? I see stirrup pants, if not every day, then at least every week. Stirrup pants and flats, often with a themed sweater or sweatshirt. This is Ohio, bitches.

Maggie, it’s the CARROT EFFECT on the legs.

  23. sandra on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at 12:36 pm

Oh Michael, I am so so sorry.

  24. freakgirl on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at 12:40 pm

That’s what I’m going to wear to my party.

Navy-blue stirrups with gold flats and a white sweatshirt with a kitten bedazzled on it.

  25. Soosan on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at 12:42 pm

A grumpy kitten in a coffee mug that reads “I don’t do mornings”.

  26. Susie on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at 12:45 pm

Holy shit, Michael…really? On women of what age?

I think sometimes the line is very faint between leggings and tights, but I do think that generally tights are… well…tighter than leggings. They have very little stretch-out-as-the-day-goes-on factor. Does that even make sense? Also, I think seams are a big tipoff.

I love tights. Always have. I can’t tell you how happy I am that opaque tights and empire waists are back. Of course, they’re practically out again, but I live in Jersey. I can afford to be a little behind the times. Although, I suppose it could be worse — I could live in Ohio.

As for women with hips in stirrup pants…just NO.

That’s my favorite thing I’ve read this week. Also, I would pay handsomely to see that.

Susie, I would say from their late 50s to pushing death.

  28. freakgirl on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at 1:21 pm

In all seriousness, I do wear holiday-themed t-shirts. But they are always cool. In my head, anyway.

I think we should have a party where we all have to wear the best themed, embroidered or bedazzled sweater or sweatshirt we can find.

  29. Greater Czarina on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at 1:58 pm

OMG, a bedazled sweater/sweatshirt party would rawk!

I still have a couple of those from the 80s, lurking in my downstairs closet. I’d love to bust one out. Alas, my old stirrup pants from the same time period are No More.

I went to an ugly christmas sweater party this year, and it was actually quite hard to find one… so my friends and I made them. I got a bright green sweater, and then sewed a stocking to the front of it (and coincidentally, it had a picture of a kitten wearing a scarf on it).

We had planned an American Gladiator New Years too, but sadly that fell through. # (note: this plan was in the works before we even knew it was coming back to TV… how funny!).

Soosan, you sure go to a lot of theme parties! Fun!

Half way through reading this thread I couldn’t get Jem Sweater out of my head. Just so you know.

Leggings are generally made of heavier weight fabric than tights and (if properly manufactured) will last much longer than tights. Leggings are fine as pants because they are comfortable for everyone. It’s time that we ALL wear leggings. Get over the fashionista and body image constraints and just wear them. You know you want to, you know they’ll be more comfortable than the constrictive clothes you wear now. Go for it. Enjoy leggings and wear them. Choose a well made pair - not with cotton fibers that bag out over time but a high tech fiber that retains its shape. Go for the comfort and support. Leggings that go to the ankle have a greater positive visual aesthetic than capri style that chop the leg. Plus the full length leggings support you from your ankle to your waist and give you an energetic lift. Laugh, Live, Love & Enjoy! Check out www.UnJeans.com
