It sounds fun and a good idea, but the band did get scammed. There are also other stories, I think by IE, of people making a birthday party in a bar for a random person. but ultimately, these kinds of things could be hurtful to some people - they are playing with their emotions. of course, those directed at Abercrombie & Fitch, and similar corporate targets, are pretty cool, though.
