I Scream, You Scream
We recently purchased a Cuisinart ice cream/frozen yogurt maker, and broke it in this weekend.
I made a batch of vanilla with frozen blueberries, and mama mia, was it delicious. I used a combo of skim milk and half-and-half, as I don’t do well with whole milk. It came out kind of soft, but from what I’ve read, that’s just the way the machine works. We stuck it in the freezer for a while, and then used it to top some farm stand blueberry pie. HEAVEN. There’s still a bit left over and I look forward to noshing on it tonight.
Do you guys ever make ice cream or yogurt at home? Share your favorite recipes and tips on getting the best product in the comments. Thanks!

OoOoOo, jellus! I want an ice-cream maker so bad, but someone isn’t allowed ice-cream because of his stupid fatty liver, so I struggle on without one =P~

Or, y’know, just eat it in front of him. ;)

I want to get an ice cream maker, but just haven’t gotten around to it. I also worry it will be just another one of those things that I buy with good intention but eventually gets demoted to the basement next to the rice maker. Ice cream recipes look so easy and yummy, though. So many possibilities! So you don’t suggest a Cuisinart?

I’m fine with the Cuisinart. It’s simple, no messy rock salt or ice like old-school makers. I don’t expect to have rock-hard ice cream, especially because you don’t add any stabilizers or other chemicals. And the price was right, under $50.

We used to make ice cream all the time when I was little. I just remember it had this particular taste that wasn’t like anything else. It was good, but not what I remember expecting. Of course, the makers have come a long way since the stone age.
One year, friends of ours made ice cream at a backyard birthday party with the kids and they forgot to put in the sugar. Oddly enough, almost all of the kids ate it and liked it. It was kind of like frozen creme freche.

When we were little, our neighbors had an old hand-cranked machine. One of my favorite summer memories was eating that ice cream at night, watching the fireflies.
I want to keep experimenting with sugar…I put in a little less than the recipe called for (not much less, just a bit) and I think I can keep cutting it.

We got a Cuisinart ice cream maker for a wedding gift… so 9 years ago? We’ve only used it once or twice because we never have the freezer space for the container (do you still have to prefreeze them?) Also? My hubby made cookies & cream, but bought these special OREOs that were out at the time. They changed the color of your milk to blue… so our ice cream ended up being a dull grayish blue color. NOT very appetizing, but it still tasted delicious!

Gelato. Use fresh fruit and cream, i’ll try to find our recipes, but the inclusion of lemon juice makes fruit gelato come to LIFE.

Sandyjoys, yes you have to pre-freeze the bucket. Luckily we have a deep freezer in the garage. Lots of room.

All the home ice cream makers with the bucket you must pre-freeze make soft ice cream, but you are then supposed to firm it up in the fridge, once it’s ready.
There are ice cream makers out there that you plug in and they have self-contained freezers, but they’re so expensive and totally not worth in IMO.
We have the Cuisinart and I think it’s great. When I can remember to put the damn bucket in the freezer!

I also got a tip to chill the batter for a while, too. I might try putting it in the freezer for a short while, too, and see how that works.
God, it was so good to taste ice cream with real vanilla. Mmmm.
