I Need New Running Shoes
My running shoes are several years old and it’s time to find a new pair before I get injured. I’d like some recommendations for decently-priced sneakers with good support. I’m not a runner; I mostly do a jog/walk/sometimes-sprint combo when I exercise. Right now I’m wearing Sauconys, which I like because they’re American (read: non-sweatshop) made. But I’m open to all suggestions.

I need some too. I’ve got a pair of New Balance that are great but starting to wear down. I plan on going to a running store and making sure I get something appropriate for my foot type. They usually watch you walk, and judge by that. If you’ve never done it before, I’d recommend it. May make for a much more pleasant experience for when you do end up jogging/sprinting.
So, sorry, no specific recommendations. You could also take a look at Runner’s World magazine – they usually have a “new shoe reviews” section.

I agree that for the best shoe for YOU, get thee whichever local store runner’s swear by. They can look at your body/legs/gait and tell you what’s best (though I doubt they know what’s the most earth/society friendly).

I buy New Balance because they have a factory outlet right nearby, so I can get them for $30 a pair or so. Because I’ve had tendonitis in the past and I am a runner, I end up buying 2-3 pairs a year. In my experience, replacing your shoes every few months is more important than finding the ideal fit, in terms of preventing injuries.

Go to a running store and get properly fitted. You’ll be amazed. And your feet will thank you.

The running store I go to and train with seems to sell lots of Asics, Brooks, Mizunos, and Sauconys. I wear Asics GT-2100 series shoes and have for years. They are a stability shoe that’s fairly priced…not the “top of the line” but recommended many times over for regular runners. The Gel-Kayano is the cadillac version. Love those too, but often can’t afford them. :) If you go to the Asics website, you can see more about their philosophy, history, materials, etc.

Beth, where does one find one of these…running stores?
I’ve made it my business to avoid sports-related shopping. ;)

Any good running store should have some brooks. They are not that cheep, usually around 90- 140, but you will be glad you bought them. As stated above the fit of the shoe is what matters most. I have run in addidas, souconys and brooks and the brooks fit my feet the best.

Oy, I don’t know if my workouts warrant a pair that pricey. But I guess I’ll just go to a store and find out what feels the best. Like everyone says, it’s worth the price to avoid injury.

The store I go to is in Wall (down the shore), which isn’t overly convenient for you. I hear there is a good one in Bedminster/Basking Ridge – I’ll look into that and get back to you.

Thanks, Beth!
