Hide Your Condoms
Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at 09:30amMaybe I’m cranky from being sick, maybe I’m totally off the mark, but hear me out. I just ran across this product, which is a women’s compact with a “secret compartment” for carrying condoms. I get the spirit behind it — keep yourself protected, safe sex, la la la — but why are we hiding the condoms? Why isn’t it okay to have a condom in your purse? Why keep them in a “secret and discreet” compartment? Is carrying a condom shameful or embarrassing? Isn’t it that shame that prevents a lot of women from carrying their own condoms in the first place? What’s so shameful about having a condom in your purse? Am I being ridiculous and petty?
I’m interested in hearing your thoughts.

Women with condoms in their purse are sluts.

Nice, Ivon.
An ex-boyfriend told me that once, believe it or not. Douche.

If it was loose in my purse I’d be worried about it falling out at an inopportune moment, like at the courthouse when I have to pull out my attorney ID. Not a good way to make a professional impression.

True. Although my issue isn’t with having something nice to carry them in, it’s the implication that they’re something that should be hidden.
I wouldn’t want my tampons falling out of my bag at an inopportune moment, either. Not because I’m ashamed of having my period but because some people can’t deal with the mental image. I used to use this, actually:

Personally, I’d feel weird if people got a glimse of a condom package in my bag, so I’m fine with putting it somewhere out of sight, as well as reducing the chances of it falling out. Ashamed no, private matter, yes. Plus, I’d know where it is exactly when in a mad rush to find it so it doesn’t kill the moment digging around in a purse/side table/etc.!

Good points, all of those.

At the Courthouse? Why do you need condoms at work?

Personally I like Left Eye’s technique- One over the eye, one hanging from your ear and the rest pinned all over your clothes. RIP Left Eye.
GeekBoy on Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at 11:56 am
Just be careful how you pin it, I guess.
Lisa on Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at 12:23 pm
Is it about hiding the condoms or keeping them safe? GB said the magic word: pin. A condom is useless if it gets damaged by keys, pens, etc at the bottom of your purse. Better to keep it some place secure. There was a big scandal in So Africa while I was there: some organization STAPLED a flier onto the free condoms they distributed on campus. Not so smart.

I can get behind the “keeping them safe” thought. The product itself, though, is for discretion. They don’t mention that condoms can get damaged if floating around free in your bag.
They say this on their site: “Often, situations arise where self-betrayal replaces self-knowledge with the belief that having unprotected sex will please her partner and begin or keep a relationship going; all of which could put her life at risk. Furthermore, the idea of purchasing condoms herself or carrying them in her purse where others may see them, might be just too embarrassing. Or she may feel judged for having them in her possession.”
Which just kind of strikes me as judgy. Self-betrayal?
Regardless, SAFE SEX = THE RIGHT THING TO DO.

That gun one is effed up!
jon on Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at 2:24 pm
Yup. Just remember to check to makre sure that it isn’t your real gun before you leave the house.
Imagine trying to get that through security.
Add some danger while you are keeping it safe. Hey I know what you are thinking… Did he fire 5 shots or six”- Are you feeling lucky tonight- Punk! It also brings a whole new meaning to “Having one in the Chamber.” And the whole concept of “getting banged”- or “busting a cap.” ok… ill stop.

The only way I could see you wanted to hide them, as opposed to just having them in a container to keep them safe, is if you’re a teen. I could see a lot of teens having unprotected sex because they are afraid of their parents finding the condoms.
Shannon on Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at 4:30 pm
Jill beat me to my first thought…this would be cool for teenage girls. Other than that, why would anyone care if someone saw their condom? I’d rather have that tumble out of a bag than a tamploon. Which gives a better mental image?

Oh I’ll be Judgy McJudgerson here: if any of that is your reasoning for not using condoms, you flat out shouldn’t be having sex whatever your age because you’re too immature.
