Hair Color
Yesterday I picked up some Naturtint at the natural-foods store and colored my hair. I bought “Light Copper Chestnut.” Sigh. I don’t know. I chose a shade darker than what I really wanted because I haven’t used this product before, and didn’t want any surprises. The color looks okay, but it’s not as bright as I’d hoped. I really have a hard time coloring my hair lately. I can’t settle on a good color. The Aveda color my hairdresser uses never lasts very long, and it seems ridiculous to pay that much for so little. So far I’ve had the best results with Lush Henna. It gives me a rich color that seems to last. But it’s SUCH a pain in the ass!

FG: I go to this place in SoHo that is shockingly not that expensive. I could call my stylist and ask her what she uses (it starts with an L I think) b/c it’s AWESOME (and maybe your stylist could order it or already has it). I have been red for like 6 mos now and it lasts for a really long time; in fact the color looks great after 3 mos but my blonde roots come in and I look weird. The other thing that really helps is the shampoo you use: ARTec color depositing (I use Red Clover) shampoo and conditioner. It smells good too, not too $$ (like $12 I think?). You can see a significant diff when your color starts to dull after just one shampooing.

Yeah, ask her what it is. I’m trying to avoid anything with peroxide and all that; the more natural, the better. Thanks!

Can I ask who this great, not expensive hairdresser in Soho is? I moved to NY recently and haven’t found a new stylist I like yet.

Ok, I have to tell you this. I saw YOU yesterday afternoon in my neighborhood. You were driving a cute little white Mercedes and had one arm out the sunroof and one arm out the window singing along to the radio. I passed by and did a three-take to make sure it wasn’t really you, but I swear it was your carefree Austin twin!

Man, I must be average-looking because people see me everywhere. ;)
That’s funny, though. I hope I wasn’t singing to anything stupid.

Why is Lush’s Henna a pain?

You have to grate it or smash it, then mix it with boiling water, and then apply it. Applying it is pretty messy as it tends to clump up on you so you have to be really careful not to drop pieces of it everywhere. Then you (at least I do) need to leave it on for about three hours.
It’s not a nightmare, but it’s a big undertaking compared to opening a bottle and combing it through your hair, y’know?

“STEP 5) Put your Caca into a heat resistant bowl or saucepan, cover with boiling water, allow the hot water to soak through for a few minutes (I take 20), then mix to the consistency of unwhipped double cream. Place the bowl or saucepan into a second saucepan containing hot water (or you cookery types can use your bain-marie). Heat until the henna is bearably hot to the touch (the hotter the better for brighter colour, but don’t burn your head).”
Holy Mike! There are 8 steps total for using the caca.
I use Clairol’s Nice & Easy 116a (lt. golden brn) mixed with 119a (spice)- 20 minutes and ta-dah! Of course, gawd knows what the peroxide is doing to my brain cells but hell, if the drinking didn’t kill ‘em …
I keed. ;D
