Facial and Frames
Well, I just got back from my first facial. It was fun. Although I asked her to see if she could extract a couple of blackheads, and that hurt like hell. She told me that I need to stop using the St. Ives; that it’s tearing my face apart. Megan told me the same thing a few weeks back when I was complaining about my skin. So – validation for Megsy! I’ve been using it for about 20 years; I guess it’s time to make some changes, huh? I’ve also been forced to end my lifelong boycott against liquid foundation when the salon lady showed me some of this. She also cleaned up my eyebrows at no charge. I was $3 short of the total (I forgot my checkbook!) and she let me slide. I need to get back there with a tip. I’m there all the time, anyway, and she knows that. Maybe I’ll bring her a little gift next visit.
I also went and picked up my new eyeglasses. They look pretty good, although not as thick as I had remembered. No biggie. The best part of that trip was that, along with my eyeglasses, in the customer tray was a $45 check made out to ME from the eye doctor. I had totally forgotten that when I went to get my exam for contacts back in November, I brought an expired insurance form. So I just paid cash, telling her I would come back some other time with the right form. I never did, but I did bring a new form when I ordered the frames. And this crazy lady remembered, and applied it to my past exam. So, even though I shelled out $40 for the frames last week, I’ve actually ended up $5 ahead. Not too shabby. As her assistant said, “Sweet.” And that’s the story of my morning. You’re welcome.
edited to add: Bonus photo of freakgirl’s new glasses!

Well you should march your butt over to your facial lady and give her that $5 young lady!
February 28th, 2006 - 11:56
Hey, good point. So now I’ve come out even!
February 28th, 2006 - 12:00
did she mean it was tearing your face apart because it is a daily exfoliator? or because st. ives sucks? cuz i use the body shop’s vit c daily cleanser/exfoliator and i would assume it would be doing the same thing to my skin.
i’m dying for a facial (dirty!), and my manager gave me a $50 gift cert for the StillWater Spa here in Toronto – the only prob is that the cheapest facial is $135, for only 30 min! OUCH.
and
will we be getting any photos of you wearing your new glasses?
February 28th, 2006 - 12:03
She said it’s the little ground up pieces in the cleanser that are very rough on the skin. I would assume other, better exfoliators are more gentle? I love St. Ives and always have, but it’s time for me to start facing the fact that my skin is no longer “youthful.”
Pic added. Be kind. ;)

cute!

I never like to recommend services b/c it always seems to bite me in the ass, but seeing as Sandra’s from Toronto, I have to say that Pure+Simple gives the absolute BEST facials in the city! Ask for Georgetta at their Yonge & Eglinton location and their unadvertised mini-facial(45mins) for $35!
February 28th, 2006 - 12:33
Love the glasses, you look great! And we LOVES the tinted moisturizer – I just picked this up: http://tinyurl.com/fuoxb last weekend and I can’t belive I haven’t been using it before now. I had never worn liquid foundation before, either and this totally rules.
February 28th, 2006 - 12:35
Jane, that looks very similar to the Aveda, no? Good to know it’s working for you!
February 28th, 2006 - 12:41
thanks, highbrow! yonge and eglington is a touch out of my neck of the woods (i live in the bloor west village, work at queen’s park), but i’ve been meaning to take a walk around that area anyway so i’ll give georgetta a call :)
February 28th, 2006 - 12:55
no more st. ives?? did she have any alternative exfoliators? b/c i’ve been using st. ives religiously for 14 years? and umm…i love change and i dread it. i love it b/c i love trying something new, but when it comes to my face, i DREAD the consequences!!!
LOVE the glasses by the way!!
February 28th, 2006 - 12:58
LOVE the new frames almost as much as I’m loving your lips in that shot. Pouty!
February 28th, 2006 - 13:04
Ali, chances are you’re a lot younger than me. If it’s not giving you problems, don’t stop. As for me, I have a Neutrogena exfoliating mask that I use once a week or so; I’ll just continue with that. I bought an Aveda face cleanser for the shower.
I don’t like spending a ton on product, but Michael and the boys go so nuts over Aveda, I figured it’s time to give it a try. ;) Oh, and thanks for the compliment, Michael! Yes, I was going for “supermodel pouty” in that shot. Ha!
February 28th, 2006 - 13:13
That’s a beautiful picture! Your skin is glowing very nicely, so good facial.
Where’d you go for the facial?
I use Avon Anew scrub, and it’s really awesome. Very fine scrubbers, but does a great job.
http://shop.avon.com/avonshop/.....;line_id=2
it’s called the Micro Exfoliant.
That 2 step facial peel rocked when I used it. I’m not sure why I stopped.
February 28th, 2006 - 13:13
Cute glasses.
And for the rest I’m not girlie enought to comment on that.
February 28th, 2006 - 13:57
Oh, and it’s true. “The boys” and I go nuts over Aveda. I have a feeling that when they isolate the gay gene one day, the high-end product gene will be nearby.
February 28th, 2006 - 13:59
Rona, I went to the place near you – Hair Gallery. Their regular cosmetologist is on maternity leave, so someone else did it, but she was great. It wasn’t anything fancy – not a spa – but it did the trick.
February 28th, 2006 - 14:04
I adore the glasses. I don’t know anything about going to get facials or whatever, so do you think that’s something we can do together in the summer when we come to visit? Take me to your salon!
I was reading about tinted moisturizer lately and wondered why I’ve never tried it. I hate wearing all-over makeup, like foundation. Sometimes I wear it because I just look so pasty, but I hate the finish it leaves on my skin. Since I don’t want to buy any new product yet, I tried mixing my regular foundation (which I dislike) with my new, super cheap generic brand moisturizer (which as it turns out, I love!) and got a great result. Some colour, no makeuppy finish. I don’t usually try to hide my blemishes with makeup because in my experience it ends up looking stupid anyway, so I just do my makeup lightly and if they show through, at least they’re minimized.
But my skin looks very dull and almost grainy. It’s still very smooth to the touch but it looks like ass. I need something to refresh it. I want to try some sort of at-home facial product, but I don’t know what to try. Money is an issue…any suggestions?
February 28th, 2006 - 14:14
Maggie, I’ve been using this with nice results (at least my skin feels really soft afterwards) – http://neutrogena.com/advanced.....t_peel.asp
I buy it for about $22US – don’t know if that’s too much? Great idea mixing the moisturizer and foundation; I’ve read about that in magazines but never tried it.
The place where I went today can only do one facial at a time, so maybe we can find a place where we can hang out together. Or just buy the stuff ourselves and have DAY OF BEAUTY!
February 28th, 2006 - 14:14
hey, i know of one at home facial product, 100% organic, that you can try – or perhaps HAVE tried, i don’t ask – and is absolutely free … but i won’t mention that product here. i hear it does wonders for the skin, though.
this joke never gets old, does it?

Has anyone used the Neutrogena Microdermabrasion kit thingy? It retails for like $42 or something and before I plunk the money down for it, I wanted to see if anyone’s used it before.
February 28th, 2006 - 14:26
Day of beauty sounds good!
I’m going to spend some time looking at products at the drugstore next time I go…they’ve got some pretty good stuff in there now. Nutrogena hasn’t steered me wrong yet, I’d be willing to give them a try. Megan, I want to try that too, despite the chance it will turn me into a Scientologist. I want to read a non-partisan review, first, too.
February 28th, 2006 - 14:27
i’ll look into the neutrogena mask then…M and the boys have all the smarts – aveda is straight from heaven!!!! i’ve never used their face products…only hair stuff that i swear by!
thanks! i don’t know how old you are…i just turned 33…and although everyone swears i’m not aging – i’m getting extremely nervous about my face and skin…hehehe stupid bday!
thanks for the advice!

Hmmm, good opinions. I’d been thinking about buying it too. Maybe next time I go to Costco I’ll see if they have it on sale. It’s not something you’re supposed to do very often, right?
and Sandra – DIRTY. (another joke that never gets old)

I love your new glasses!!
I use cetaphil/store brand cetaphil cleanser. I love it. Mild and good.
February 28th, 2006 - 16:57
I love checks that are made out to Me!
Love the glasses!!!
February 28th, 2006 - 17:06
Thank you, everyone! ya’ll are great for the ego.
I also love how we all go CRAZY in these parts for skin-care tips. :D
February 28th, 2006 - 18:09
If they ever isolate the “gay gene” they’ll recognise it by the (c)Aveda stamp on it.
February 28th, 2006 - 18:15
I must try this Aveda, then. If Michael and Andrew rub it on themselves, it’s good enough for me. ;)
February 28th, 2006 - 18:15
Oh, and whatever you do, don’t Google “my first facial”. I’m just sayin’.
February 28th, 2006 - 18:57
Ha! Fair warning from Andrew.
Maggie, I’ve never used the face products, but Aveda has been slathered everywhere else. Plus, some places let you re-use containers. Also, they smell diveen, dear.
February 28th, 2006 - 21:37
The St Ives grains are large and irregular – I bet your skin is more delicate now. I agree with the opinions upthread about a finer-grain product being better for you.
I switched to tinted moisturizer too – I like Laura Mercier better than Bobbi Brown so far
Greatest exfoliator/brightener I know – Kiehls Pineapple Papaya Scrub! (I know Janet:Kiehls as gay men:Aveda. I’ve tried a lot of Aveda products, but never found a must-have)
But every so often, I use Queen Helene mint julep mask when your pores are open are its time to suck the crap out. It’s bright green, and you leave it on til your face cracks! Good times.

FG,
My skincare two cents. I LOVE Paul Begoun’s stuff. Her website is wicked informative, too. None of her face products have scrubbies in them–she says they’re just way too harsh, no matter how small. Anyhoo, I use the 2% beta hydroxy lotion after I wash my face, and all the little bumps on my forehead went away. The name of her brand is Paula’s Choice. Her cleanser is great, too.

All this talk forced me to go out at lunchtime and plonk down a fortune at Aveda. Just because I could. I’m a marketeer’s wet dream, so suggestible.

I love the St. Ives, but for my feet instead of my face.
