Earthquake Hits ‘Big Brother’ House

Wednesday, July 30, 2008 at 08:34am

There was an earthquake yesterday in Los Angeles. I was always told that in the event of an earthquake, standing in a doorway is safest. I guess Jessie was told that the best way to survive an earthquake is taking off his shirt. So funny. Read the rest of this entry »

New “How Stuff Works” Article

My latest article is up over at How Stuff Works — How Radiation Works. This one was really hard to write. Science was never my strong suit and this topic was extremely broad.

Summer of Produce

Friday, July 25, 2008 at 08:58am

If any of you were wondering how it’s going with our farm share — pretty great! We’re managing to eat most of what we get each week, and sometimes Lisa or my parents take the extra. Right now we have a ton of zucchini and squash. I’m going to make zucchini muffins or something today, I think. I’ve enjoyed trying new things. Found out I really like bok choy. I’d also never eaten beets before. My dad told me to roast them, so I did, with a little bit of olive oil and balsamic vinegar. An hour in the oven at 400 — delicious! Along with roasted beets, dinner last night was sauteed chard and onion, with a bit of olive oil and lemon juice. Really good. We have a bunch of frying peppers this week, and we are thinking of grilling up some sausage and peppers when we visit with friends tomorrow afternoon.

Looking forward to the upcoming tomato harvest!

The Dark Knight

Friday, July 25, 2008 at 08:16am

So last night we saw The Dark Knight. It was very good. It was. But it didn’t blow me away. I don’t know why. It felt a bit long to me…that’s a long time for so much darkness. Ledger’s Joker was remarkable and really added some bizarre notes of levity to an otherwise very heavy flick. At the risk of comparing apples and oranges, if I had to pick one superhero movie this summer, I’m picking Iron Man.

Thoughts? SPOILERS shall ABOUND in the comments.

The Craft Lounge Party

Thursday, July 24, 2008 at 09:48am

Last night’s grand opening party went really well. The shop is INCREDIBLE, and Susie, Kathy and Jen have every reason to be proud. The decor is warm and inventive, and the products are high quality and lovely. There’s a crafting area in the back and a nice little lounge area for knitting and relaxing. I can’t wait to go back and do some shopping and see the place really set up. A couple photos after the jump, but you can see the entire set here. Read the rest of this entry »

Day of the Cupcakes

Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 09:03am

Tonight is my first paying cupcake gig. Good friend and freakgirl.com regular Susie is living her dream and opening up a DIY craft shop with her sister. Tomorrow is the Grand Opening, and tonight is a party so we can all see the space and ooh and ahhh and understand why Susie has been stressed to the max for the past six months. I am so thrilled for her! If you are in the area, please stop by The Craft Lounge in Leonia, NJ tomorrow (Thursday) and check it out.

Anyhoo, Susie hired me to bake six dozen cupcakes for the event. All the cupcakes are baked (2 dozen each of chocolate, vanilla and key lime) and today I’m going to make three different batches of frosting and finish them off. Making frosting in hot, humid weather is always difficult, so I’m running our A/C on high today. I’m nervous! I want them to be perfect. Last night I actually had a nightmare that I screwed them up completely. Of course, that nightmare also featured a dead old woman and an appearance by Neil Patrick Harris (unrelated), so I’m not too worried that it will come true.
