Woke up this morning with an itchy red rash on my face. This happened to me last week, too, and I’m starting to think that my beloved Burt’s Bees is to blame. Noooooooooooooo! I’m also getting a haircut in about an hour and a half and I don’t know what I want.

This New York Mag article about how shoes have ruined our natural gait is really interesting. They mention the MBT shoes in the article - the ones I wear for walking - and I agree with both the pros and cons. [via]

Rickrolling has peaked and is now mainstream enough that you’ll probably get rickrolled by your grandma soon. Read the origin story of rickrolling here. (Yes, it’s a real link!)

Today is Earth Day. Do something to benefit the planet today. It doesn’t have to be a big deal — maybe recycle a water bottle or remember to turn off the lights when you leave the room. I plan to walk to the library to return my books instead of drive. What are YOU going to do?

Ted Allen (of Top Chef and Queer Eye for the Straight Guy fame) gave Too Much Free Time a shout-out on his blog! Check it out. I’m so tickled!

I was on the treadmill today, watching Flavor of Love 3 — shut up, I know, it’s awful, and if I hear Flav go “wooooooooooowwwww” one more time, I swear to the lord jesus and baby jesus, I am going to go on a spree — and I saw a commercial for gum. It’s selling gum as a “five calorie snack.” A “snack” that’s great for dieting. GUM IS NOT A FUCKING SNACK, YOU FUCKING FUCKERS.

On Saturday I had a conversation with Charlie and the geekboy about my love for Wes Anderson, spurred on by re-watching The Darjeeling Limited last week, and repeated viewings of The Royal Tenenbaums on cable over the past month. About his visuals and his music and how his films are just so saturated with beauty. How sometimes a single scene can squeeze your heart until you almost can’t breathe (Richie Tenenbaum’s shaving scene, the funeral in Darjeeling). Searching around on YouTube, I found these. So, the NYC Comic-Con was pretty fun. It had its problems (Saturday’s panels were ridiculously crowded and woefully unorganized) but we did enjoy ourselves and saw a lot of stuff and bought a lot of crap and all that. We grabbed some extra swag and once I get everything organized, I’ll be giving it away here on freakgirl.com. The geekboy’s recap is here.
A few photos after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »

My latest article — How Seed Banks Work. Hey, they can’t all be fascinating. And yes, I do realize that in the first paragraph it says “breath” instead of “breathe.”

I can’t believe I live in a world where there is a perceived need for this. And, conversely, where things like this happen.

Guess where we’re going tomorrow and Saturday? We have press passes this year, which makes navigating the clusterf*ck a lot easier. I’ll be bringing my camera and I’m hoping to have a lot of good stories for you on Monday. Anyone else going?

Welcome to a new feature on freakgirl.com! I came up with this idea so we can sometimes do stuff more interesting than “What Are You Wearing?” on days that I’m in the office and can’t blog much.
THE DEAL: We are going to write a story! I will kick things off with a few short sentences. Then everyone can take turns adding their own few short sentences. By the end of the day, we should have something interesting, and I will close out the story with my own ending.
THE RULES: Be brief. Do not monopolize. Keep the spirit of the story in mind and build on it for the next person — don’t write your own unrelated stuff. Try to keep it relatively clean (safe for work). BE CREATIVE. Don’t be afraid to contribute. We are all equal here. DO NOT contribute if you haven’t read every single post before yours. HAVE FUN!
And here we go… Read the rest of this entry »

We were hoping Ben would improve overnight, but he really hasn’t. I got him to eat a little bit last night and he’s been drinking water, though. He’s extremely weak (barely enough energy to sit up for an extended period) and his stomach is still very tender. I think we may call the shelter again today and ask their advice. I just don’t know what to do. I am fine with nursing him through this, but I need to make sure he isn’t suffering terribly. My poor boy. Mattie, meanwhile, is doing great, thriving, and is totally the geekboy’s best friend forever. It’s adorable. Anyway…we’ll keep you posted.
