As I re-read the end of my last post, my comments about the hurricane sound sort of obnoxious in light of the complete devastation Katrina has caused. Being inconvenienced for a day or two is absolutely nothing in comparison to what all these people are going through. Donate to the Red Cross, please, if you haven’t already. In other news, vacation is going fine, and I’m a bit sunburned and mosquito-bitten. We’ll be back on Friday night. Hope everyone is doing okay.

Hey, we’re in Florida. Things have not gone as planned. First off, we almost missed our plane due to us leaving behind a bag on the shuttle bus. Long friggin’ story, but we did make the plane and got to the Fort Myers area safely. From there we reunited with the geek family, and the geekboy’s niece in particular was thrilled to see him. She is about one and a half, and at one point just stood in front of him chanting his name. She is smitten. Not long after we arrived, I spoke to my sister, who, along with her husband, had gone to Key West for a couple of days while my parents watched the kids. They were due to arrive back last night, after watching the weather carefully all day Wednesday and Thursday, going to bed Thursday night secure in the knowledge that the hurricane was heading north. Well, it didn’t. So, they are stuck in Key West, as the one road/bridge leading onto the island is closed. This wouldn’t be so horrible, except that my niece is having a birthday party tomorrow and her schoolmates are all invited.

I got a very stressed-out phone call from my mother today and, after having a chat with geekmom, we decided to hop in the car and drive up to Venice, three days early. The kids were thrilled to see us, and my mother was overjoyed to share the workload. Tonight was a crisis of major proportion when we realized at 8:00pm that my niece had left her prized teddy bear at school today. She has never been away from this bear in the entire four years of her life. Please give my mother props for tracking down her teacher, picking her up and going to the school to retrieve poor Yellow Bear. The reunion was joyous and we are all extremely relieved. My mom and I just finished making a bunch of paper crowns for the kids to decorate tomorrow, I baked a cake, and the geekboy is happily watching Battlestar Galactica. My mother and I are drinking beer.

We are hoping to head back to the geekboy’s family tomorrow, and then come back here in a few days for a proper visit. In conclusion, fuck hurricanes, fuck Katrina and her waves, and for that matter, fuck April from Big Brother. Love you all.

I’m posting from the future! Actually, I’m writing this Thursday night. I gots to go to bed, as the alarm is set for 4:20am and I could not be less thrilled about THAT part of our vacation. However, by late Friday morning we should be in Florida, safe and sound. I’ll try to post a little while I’m away but I PROMISE NOTHING! The geekboy and I will miss ya’ll. Hang out and chat in the comments if you’d like. Or, you know, go outside.

Since all my google ads are trying to sell me poison ivy medicine, I figured I’d give you an update. It is going away. I still have angry red marks all over my tummy and bumps on my neck and arms and all that, but the itching is minimal at the moment. Over the weekend, for no apparent reason, my one eyelid developed a big old bumpy patch and then turned purple. I looked like a battered wife. However, it’s just fine now. Hopefully, by the time I am poolside in Florida next week, I will not frighten the children.
