A Thanksgiving Message from Shannon (re: yesterday’s post about Camden): Camden is where I participated in Election Protection. No sugar coating needed, it is a tough area, but, just like Trenton, the people I talked to were really cool and very nice. I did see a very heated and ongoing girl fight, and as I got dragged into it a bit when someone asked me to get help i was afraid. But bystanders came over to me, sorry I had to see the daily grind. I can’t imagine someone in my town apologizing to me if I witnessed an “unsightly” event.
I don’t know what the solution is, but we really need to at least acknowledge and understand the social constructs that enable places like Camden, Trenton, Elizabeth, and Newark to exist in such a wealthy country. Pick up a copy of Amazing Grace if you haven’t read it.
So, I’m thinking about Thanksgiving and Christmas, and how we can make a tiny difference. If anyone is willing to put together a Thanksgiving dinner (uncooked) and get it to either Freakgirl or to me, I will deliver it to a family in Camden this Wednesday (tomorrow). My mom and I have done this in Trenton for the past two years. It was so fun to see the thought that went into each care package – chips, cookies, nuts, fruits, rolls, candies, all of the goodies that make Thanksgiving that over the top meal. Contact Freakgirl if you or someone you know would like to participate.

Earlier I linked to a Yahoo picture of a soccer hooligan that had a caption saying something like, “Typical Brits have poor oral hygiene, no style, and drinking problems.” Needless to say, the picture and caption appear to have been removed. In the meantime, Caption! This! Picture! of the guy who puts the “Brit” in “celebrity.”
