So we went to the Tell Us The Truth show at Webster Hall over the weekend. It was v.v. good. Even though each artist only got to perform about three or four songs, it was a nice mix. Janeane Garafolo hosted, and it pains me to admit that I wasn’t all that impressed with her. I felt like I was being yelled at. Anyway. They opened with a group version of The Chambers Brothers’ People Get Ready, and then Lester Chambers himself performed a couple of blues numbers. Next up was “The Nightwatchman,” aka Tom Morello, and can someone please explain THAT to me? I apologize if you’re a fan, but what kind of person who’s not a professional wrestler gets to give himself a nickname? Ack. And his songs make him sound like the tone-deaf love child of Johnny Cash and Nick Cave. Onstage next was one of my favorites, Jill Sobule, who had the place in hysterics. When asked to write a song about the war, she instead came up with I’m a War Correspondent in Love. ADORE HER.

After that was Boots Riley of The Coup, who was great. I need to find out more about him. Steve Earle came out after that and played some great stuff, including Christmas in Washington, which was particularly sweet because Woody Guthrie’s sister was in attendance, enjoying herself. Billy Bragg played last and, as always, was energetic and witty. The whole bunch of ‘em came out again at the end to play Time Has Come Today. Good stuff.

Here are pictures. I’m still getting used to the digital camera, so give me a break.

Great episode of Survivor last night. Sad, though. Please, please, please remove Jon from my television screen. I can only take so much. I hate him so intensely, it makes me nervous. Talk more in the forums.
