A friend of mine refs on her derby league. Could you do that? Also, have you tried cross training like with pilates or some other form of exercise? Also, get a foam roller or some of the great products that Trigger Point makes & roll out the pain! It really works! http://tptherapy.com/

Can you find other ways to be involved in derby without actually getting on skates for awhile?

Jennifer, I've read Pamie's post. It's really good. I revisit it a lot.

Loxxie, yes to everything. I'm not ready to quit for good yet, but I think I need to take a break until I can level out and figure out what the fuck this medication is up to and get rid of it. Then we'll see if I can bounce back.

Love to you all...

Quitting for realsies is a big decision. I would stick it out at the 1-3 practice for a bit longer, wait for the meds to sort themselves out and then reassess. Chances are if a medication is altering your body so much that you can't lose weight given how frequently we work out, it is also impacting your physical ability to play roller derby. Juts breathe and remember that practice is what counts. Practice is where you get to be an ass and do things wrong 32498 times before you get it right--which is only made more frustrating if you could do it in the first place and now your body just doesn't do it. I had plow stops NAILED. Nailed 'em. I swear. I was a crap jammer that was always sent in as a blocker because of how bad I was at jamming, but my plow stops only took me two seconds before I was done moving instead of the given three. Some point this summer I learned how to jam and plow stops went out the god damn window. I keep getting better at jamming aaand my plow stops are atrocious. Still. It was a major accomplishment this Friday that it only took me 6 seconds to stop with a plow, and that made me feel really pathetic. But you know what? It's whatever. I think the only reason my plow stops refuse to do anything but suck is because I get so trapped in my head, reminding myself A) the steps of how to do it and B) that I could fucking do it at some point so I should stop being a little bitch. Neither of those things are helping me. Just breathe and do the dropped level and (try) to remove some of the embarrassment you're forcing upon yourself. Not a single one of us look down on you for realizing your limitations right now and trying to do it the right way, so I'm pissed that you do. I respect you for it. <3

I think you need to read Pamie's post about quitting roller derby:
http://pamie.com/2011/08/calling-off-the-jam/

You may or may not be at the same point that she got to, but it kind of sounds like you have similar issues. Especially if you are in pain all the time doing it, how much fun are you going to have?

I think having to quit roller derby is one of those things that happens with age/injury, though. Sad but true. It might be the time for you to quit, it might not. But either way, it might help to read about when someone else had the same issue.

You've come a long way and now it's time to focus on long-term healing. Make a smart plan and trust your instincts. LOVE you (and so do two little girlies I know).

The meds saved your life when you needed them. Now they're a burden and a hassle and they keep you down. Sounds to me that it's time to get rid of the meds. Maybe even derby feel better. And the only advise I can give you there is don't be so hard on yourself. Focus on the things that go well and that you enjoy, instead of the stress and the pain. Remember the good times. And don't quit. Because that will only lead to more self hatred and loathing and eventually more stress. Maybe you can find a different role to play in derby? Referee, assistant coach?
You've come a long way and we're all proud of you. Big hug from over the pond :)

Love to you. <3 Saving your life came first. If this is the "cost" you are more than worth it. Keep fighting. You have tremendous fight in you, keep digging.
