Christmas Cards
Monday, December 10, 2007 at 01:53pmThis year I decided I would only send out about a dozen holiday cards. Then I look at my card list to get the addresses and somehow I end up with like 65 people on my list and I’m afraid to cut anybody out. So now I need more cards. I love getting cards in the mail, so I also enjoy sending them out. But I’m really weird about feeling obligated to send them to everybody. How do I get the card monkey off my back? Are people offended when they send cards but don’t get any in return? What is the etiquette? HELP ME I CAN’T LICK ANYMORE ENVELOPES.

We don’t do cards. Ever. So now we don’t get many cards either. So I guess the etiquette is that if they don’t send you cards, you don’t have to send them any?

I usually only send them to people who I have received them from the previous year. This is something my mom taught me. She’s very very social and would otherwise end up sending way too many cards each year.

We get a lot of cards…it happened when we got married; I guess all the extended family had our address handy and it just snowballed from there.
NEXT year I will cut down. This year I will continue with the monstrous amount. I wonder how many trees I’ve killed?

I send cards when I’m smart enough to remember to buy them early enough. This year I forgot. So I’m not bothering this year. I still love you all!

I still have my cards that I never got around to sending out last year. Ahem. Maybe this year?
But, even though I’m totally lazy, I love getting cards from other people. Suckers

I slogged through it this weekend. The etiquette seems to be - “I care about you, but, you know, not enough to call and stuff. So I just write you something funny once a year. Write me back.”
Problem is, by the time I get to the bottom of the pile, I’m really snarky and weird.

I just sent out 20 - I know because that’s the amount of cards the package says it contained and it was just the right amount (unless I get cards from people unexpectedly then I’ll have to get more dang it). I too send out cards to only those who send me cards and it is mainly friends, not family. I don’t get upset if I don’t get a card from someone I have sent one to - I completely understand that it just doesn’t happen every year for everyone. And my list is not yet out of control. At that point I’ll just stop.

Heh. I’m embarrassed to say here how many people are on our list. Fortunately, we do New Year cards, so I don’t even get started on them until around Dec. 15th. I’ve been thinking that this year, I should get the kids to lick the envelopes. You know, make them earn their keep and all.

I think that’s a great idea. Plus it will give them all sorts of opportunities to crack corny jokes.
