Zappa Plays Zappa
Friday night, Lisa and I went to see Zappa Plays Zappa in Asbury Park. This was pretty fun for me for several reasons — the first is that our good friend Matt has forged a relationship of mutual respect with Mr. Zappa over the past six months, due to Matt’s expertise in technical artistic and musical things I know nothing about but are pretty important. Watching Matt get to work with someone who is completely on his level was pretty great.
A Couple of Photos
I took a couple photos when we went to the farmer’s market and then New Hope over the weekend.
The Hold Steady @ Starland Ballroom
Lisa and I had a great time at the Hold Steady show over the weekend. Here’s a review from the local paper — it gets it right. The photo of Craig in the article is classic. I told Lisa he is like the lovechild of Iggy Pop and Buster Bluth.
The only negative thing I have to say about the show is regarding the drunken Rock of Love Bus reject chick in front of us. Honey, next time, wear a bra.
Weekend Wrapup
Hello, how was your weekend? Ours was quite nice. Our friends Arne & Jen got married last week, and had a reception in Philly for friends and family. The party was at the Vesper Boat Club, which was lovely. We had a nice view of the city, and the food and drink was great. We stayed in a posh hotel, where a few of us met for drinks afterward. Then we headed over to Arne and Jen’s fab and spacious apartment. They live super close to a cool bar, where we continued the party with more cocktails, hot wings and burgers. After that, we enjoyed a peaceful walk back to the hotel, where we collapsed into ridiculously comfortable beds. It was great to hang out with everyone — Jon, Ferd, Lara, Arne and Jen.
A Few Snaps from the Weekend
Please to enjoy some photos of the weekend.
On Friday we went with the GeekFamily to the Camden Aquarium, and a good time was had by all (even though it was rainy and cold out). The kids were great on the train and did pretty well for a very long day! On Saturday afternoon, I made a last-minute decision to slip into the city for a few hours to visit with Michael. He was there for a quick weekend getaway, and we didn’t think we were going to be able to meet up. But we did, sharing a visit to the Guggenheim and Crumbs Bakery.

I made these for a party celebrating Matt and Charlie B’s birthdays. It was a wonderful afternoon, where we caught up with some old friends and spent some quality time with little Misses Sophie and Echo. Adorable girls, they are. For his birthday gift, Shannon surprised Matt with plane tickets to London. While there, Matt will be meeting up with none other than Dweezil Zappa — the two of them have been doing a lot of work together virtually, and this will be their first face-to-face hang. I imagine it will be a haze of guitars and computers and keyboards and creative energy. I’m so excited on Matt’s behalf and I can’t wait to hear about what they create together.
Travis @ Webster Hall
Lisa and I went to see Travis over the weekend, something we’ve done together about five times now. We’ve seen them in large venues and smaller venues, and the smaller the better. This show was definitely in the Top 3. It was also one of the sweatiest, as it was nearly 90 degrees in New York City on Saturday.
Simply put, I love this band. Sometimes I think that people don’t know who I really am unless they go with me to see live music. I get completely transported when I’m in a crowd with someone I love, watching artists I love perform songs I love. Yeah, I’m kind of a sap.

How Was Your Weekend?
Did you all have a nice weekend? We spent ours getting things done, as usual. No matter how much we get done, though, there always seems to be more. On Saturday, I did a little cleaning and got started on a monster pile of ironing. My parents came over for lunch and gifted us with a little variety pack from Crumbs Bakery. YUM! These are some really good cupcakes, people. Next time I go, I’ll be buying the Baba Booey cupcake. You’ll find me in the corner, hunched over it, cooing, “My precious.” Saturday night we drove over to visit my cousins and their kids. My cousin Kelly made a nice dinner, the geekboy got his Lego on, and after the kids went to bed we plugged in Guitar Hero. Good times.
Yesterday, we ran some errands to Home Depot and Target. The geekboy had to repair our leaky downstairs toilet, and then our garage door stopped working correctly. I don’t believe those two things are related, by the way. Anyway, the toilet is fixed, even though it was a massive headache due to a faulty stopper. As for the garage door, I messed around with the settings of the sensors and it seems to be working now. I guess we’ll see. And what did YOU do this weekend?
