The Pee Wee Herman Show

This weekend we went to see The Pee Wee Herman Show on Broadway. What magical fun! For reals! The show is a hybrid of his Saturday morning tv show and his original stage show from 1981. Even some of the original cast members returned — including Lynne Marie Stewart as Miss Yvonne, who you might know today as Charlie’s Mom on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The show had all my old favorites, like the Penny cartoon, the Mr. Bungle film, and the SECRET WORD!

If I had any complaint, I’d say that Paul Reubens seemed a bit low-energy during our performance. But can you blame him? He’s the entire show and does it, what, six or eight times a week? I’m just so happy they brought the show to NYC for a while. The glaring missing piece, of course, was the late Phil Hartman as Captain Carl. The new show eliminates his character altogether (as well as Monsieur LeCroc, the puppet he voiced), which is a nice tribute to Mr. Hartman but very sad nonetheless. He is missed.

We finished our day and evening with drinks at the Algonquin, and an amazing meal at Lattanzi.

How Was Your Weekend?

This weekend was busy, busy. Our friend Nicky came up from Virginia to visit, and we kept her entertained even as she valiantly battled a massive cold. Friday night Lisa stuffed us full of homemade enchiladas and we played Rock Band until late. Saturday, we headed into the city to see American Idiot (audio), which we really enjoyed. Rock opera!

After the show, we walked over to Piano Due restaurant. It was a little tough to find (slightly tucked away off the street), but totally worth the trouble and the money. Our meals were amazing. I had an appetizer that was a large ravioli with an egg in it…when I cut into the ravioli, egg yolk spilled out, and it was LIFECHANGING. I miss that ravioli.

Yesterday, we spent the afternoon in Asbury Park, which was a bit chilly but really fun. There’s a pinball museum there, with vintage machines, and you can play them all! See them in the photos on the post below.

How Was Your Weekend?

february snowstorm

We got some snow. Saturday morning Lisa and I decided to take a walk so I could pull out my much-neglected camera. I got some nice, if not generic, winter wonderland shots. It felt good, and the cinnamon latte I got at the Starbucks we walked to felt even better. Yesterday I was also inspired to pull out my yarn and I began knitting a scarf. We watched 500 Days of Summer, I balanced my checkbook and did laundry, and shoveled the driveway. Today I baked jelly donut cupcakes to take to work tomorrow. It was a good weekend. More snow photos after the jump.

How Was Your Weekend?

I laughed a lot, drank a lot, ate a lot and generally pushed my weekend as far as possible. And this happened:

The Jill & Julia Show

Last night Lisa and I went to the Jill & Julia Show at Joe’s Pub in NYC. Jill being the incredible singer Jill Sobule and Julia being the brilliant comedian Julia Sweeney. What a great night. Jill would play a song, and then Julia would tell a story about her life. We learned about her daughter, her parents, her ex-boyfriends and her current husband (an amazing story I can’t even recount here because it would take too long). Jill’s voice was spot-on and her songs were perfect (one even bringing me to tears about halfway through the set).

Here is some footage from another show, just so you can have a taste. If they ever come to your town, you should go. It’s a treat.

A New Year

nye cupcakes

So, how was your New Year’s? Do anything fun? Friends of mine had their traditional party, so Lisa and I braved the ice and rain to bring them some champagne cupcakes and indulge the kids in some American Idol karaoke on the Wii. A good time was had by all.

Fran Healy & Andy Dunlop @ Joe’s Pub 11/6/09

fran healy

Friday night Lisa and I went to see Fran & Andy from Travis as they kicked off a six-night stint at Joe’s Pub in the Village. It was a really interesting show — much different than what I’m used to from them. It was, I guess, an “unplugged” version of Travis. Usually their shows are quite raucous, but this was a quiet affair with Fran simply telling stories. Following is the setlist, along with some of the stories he told (at least the ones I remember). I’ll never hear “Flowers in the Window” quite the same again.

Weekend Wrapup

lemon buttermilk cupcake guinness cupcake

How was your weekend? Mine was lovely. Had a small-ish dinner party on Saturday night. We pigged on turkey chili, veggie lasagna, munchies, apple desserts and cupcakes. And sidecars. And cider. And wine. Fun. I got to re-connect with friends I haven’t seen in ages, and enjoyed a Jersey diner breakfast yesterday with Lisa and Jon. An excellent weekend overall, although I did have a bit of a hangover yesterday. Eh, it was worth it.

Those cupcakes up there? Yum. The first one is lemon buttermilk, stuffed with lemon curd, with a lemon buttercream. The second is chocolate Guinness with a Bailey’s buttercream.

How was your weekend? I know Michael did GREAT at the marathon and Soosan rocked her 5K. Kudos to you both! :)
